The basketball games took place over a period of two days. The sophomores were not the only ones to enjoy themselves. During free periods many high school students observed the games with friends. Sophomore Laurie Carpenter said, I think everyone benefited from the experience. Melinda Solmon believes that the Episcopal students exposure to the children would help them realize how lucky they are to be physically normal and of average or above average intelligence. For their community service project, the sophomores hosted handicapped students from Central Middle, Baker Middle, Leblanc Special Services, and Arlington Vocational School. In preparation for the games, the sophomores chose various jobs: scorekeeping, working at the concession stand, referees, and “team buddies. Amy Reese from Central Middle School expressed her attitude towards the Special Olympics games. It's fun. I love getting away from school, she said laughing as she dashed onto the court for her first game. 62 Running the sophomore class is not all work and no play.
