For their community service project, the sophomores hosted handicapped students from Central Middle, Baker Middle, Leblanc Special Services, and Arlington Vocational School. In preparation for the games, the sophomores chose various jobs: scorekeeping, working at the concession stand, referees, and “team buddies. Amy Reese from Central Middle School expressed her attitude towards the Special Olympics games. It's fun. I love getting away from school, she said laughing as she dashed onto the court for her first game. 62 Running the sophomore class is not all work and no play. Rolls M Scrolls I3eing a freshman isn't easy1. We don't know why, but wc just feel like everyone is saying 'Look at the stupid little freshmen, ' said freshman Dana Young. Is everyone laughing? We don't even pay attention to them, said junior Amy Howell. Sounds more like apathy than harassment. But this year the new assistant to the headmaster. Father Bob Trent, tried to change all that. Father Trent's plan is to make each class a distinct community within itself and in the school. I want to build on it [the sense of community] in two ways: first, hold school-wide events like homecoming; secondly, build a strong sense of class identity. A class is more than a collection of individuals, said Father Trent. To carry out his plan. Father Trent created a Freshman Spirit Day as well as a matriculation book beginning with the Freshman Class. Freshman Spirit Day, September 25. began with a breakfast of sweet smelling cinnamon rolls and milk. Students wore T-shirts that read. We have spirit, we have fun, we're the class of 91. In the beginning, nobody wanted to wear the shirts because we were afraid the seniors would make fun of us, but then the whole class did, and we got excited, said freshman Blaire Neher. The matriculation service's purpose was to officially recognize people into the high school, said Father Trent. Students signed their names in a matriculation book. When we look back, we'll be proud that we were the first class to be in the book, said Dana Young. It's as if the school really began with us. Garrick Cason. Charles Carter, and Chris Cobb are among the first to sign the Matriculation book.  The basketball games took place over a period of two days. The sophomores were not the only ones to enjoy themselves. During free periods many high school students observed the games with friends. Sophomore Laurie Carpenter said, I think everyone benefited from the experience. Melinda Solmon believes that the Episcopal students exposure to the children would help them realize how lucky they are to be physically normal and of average or above average intelligence.
