Mrs. Snelling, who studies shells, organized the seventh grade shelling retreat to Black's Island. She taught the students how to clean, bleach, identify, and class the shells they discovered. On the second and third day some people decided to shell again, but the Tom Sawyers and Huck Finns chose to be adventurous and explore the rest of Black's Island. The students got to the island by way of motor boats. It's a remote refuge, owned and inhabited by a single man. Along with Mrs. Snelling, Mrs. Hebert, Mrs. Moak, and Mr. Perkins also chaperoned. Most of the seventh graders agreed that the chaperones had as much fun as the students. hey'd hiss at you and wave their X claws, said Bret Manner, a seventh grader chasing a school of crabs on the sandy shores of Black's Island, Florida.
