Katherine Juban takes a break from watching the animals so she can join her friends in climbing trees. found it both educational and fun. Watching the animals was fun enough for Jason Juban, but David Perkins was disappointed because the animals were just sitting there sleeping. He'd rather see them in their natural habitat. TJ major focus for this year's fifth II grade was the study of animals, both domestic and wild. In Mrs. Walker's English class, the students wrote poems about animals. For social studies, they each wrote reports on an animal of their choice. It was interesting, said Lisa Pizzo-lato, I liked how they had the trees and how they made it look like (the animals') homes. As an extension of the social studies class, the fifth graders took a field trip to the New Orleans Zoo. On October 20, the students, along with teachers and mothers, boarded buses for the ride to New Orleans. After arriving at the zoo, the teachers divided the children into groups of continents. The different continents were to remain together throughout their stay at the zoo. Even though the trip was meant to be educational, said Katie Washing, I thought it was a lot more fun. The children were extremely well-behaved. and the weather was beautiful, said Mrs. Rutter. This snake, of the New Orleans Zoo, was one of the favorite animals of the fifth graders. Another favorite was a newborn baby white alligator. taking friends To heighten the students' interest in animals, several fifth grade teachers kept animals in their rooms. In Mrs. Rutter's class, the students observed a butterfly hatching from a cocoon. Dr. Sauls kept an aquarium in his room for a period of time. In Mrs. Tydor's class, the fifth graders befriended Frederick, the class hamster.
