Bleacher Creatures The Senior Sports Support T he Bleacher Creatures took E.H.S. by storm on October 17, 1986. The unprecedented student athletic support group founded by Jason Dupree in 1986, the Bleacher Creatures still crawl to every game intimidating rivals, supporting the Knights, and wrecking havoc in their wake. Dupree's reason for founding the organization is to solicit more fan support. I wanted to get all the juniors out to the games. We were winning, and nobody was coming.'' The eleven founding fathers include: Charles Carpenter, Jon Coleman, Jason Dupree, Shawn Frazer, John Hook, Terrell Joseph, Chris King, Bud Shenefelt, Mike Vick, Geordy Waters and Phil Zuber, Chris King has another theory of the Bleacher Creatures' mission: “To show our class dominance over the school. Bleacher Creatures was a new concept of student spirit. It needed to bombard the school to gain acceptance. It did. The uniform: a navy or gold T-shirt or sweatshirt. The front bares their title: “Bleacher Creatures. The back reads, Class of ‘88 Kicks A . Now exclusively a senior organization, the Bleacher Creatures show up at football games holding signs to support players Jim Douglas or Tom Cockerham. Their trinkets and props include cowbells, foghorns, and their own unique cheers. Bud Shenefelt's get-up includes a blue metallic wig, colored face paint with matching gloves, and a loud voice for the occasion. To insure the tradition, the senior Creatures hand down their shirts to selected juniors, come spring. Bleacher Creatures Rule! Front Row: Phil Zuber, Mike Vick, Brandon Brown. 36 Thy Sister's Keeper Big Sis-IOis '87 T hree months of posters, A gifts and anticipation came to an end when the Junior girls discovered the bearer of such surprises on Friday, November 21. From the beginning of the school year, anticipation grew for the Lil' Sisscs. They knew the annual event of Big Sis-Lil'Sis would bring them closer to the Senior girls. The tradition gives the Junior girls an older friend they can count on. The year began with locker decorations, small gifts and special notes for the Lil' Sisses. All year long the Big Sisses had been planning for November 21. In October, they had a lock-in to plan the skit, write songs, create a theme and make posters. Holly Strange hosted a Halloween breakfast prior to the announcement of the group divisions. All the Juniors knew their Big Sisses were in the room with them; they just didn't know who they were! The week before the ceremony was the busiest for the Big Sissies. All the plans were finalized that week with skit and song practice poster hangings, scavenger hunt plans and final decoration touches. Invitations announced: come celebrate Puttin' on the Ritz! The Lil' Sisses received it on Thursday, November 20, with a white carnation. Friday morning, the Lil' Sisses saw Perkins I lall plastered with posters. The girls were dressed in Sunday's best and could not wait until the end of school to find out who their Big Sisses were. The Lil' Sisses fled to the Chapel for the skit, Rags to Riches! performed by the Seniors. It was about two social groups: a Rags group and a Riches group who could not find their sisters. At the end of the skit, the two groups join forces in hopes that together they will find their Lil' Sisses. After the skit, the Lil' Sisses were blindfolded, led outside and put into a line. The Senior girls pulled their own Lil' Sisses from the lineup and each group stood seperatcly. All at once, blindfolds were removed resulting in a flurry of hugs and smiles. The Big Sisses served a dinner of roast beef and baked potato to the Lil' Sisses in the Dining Hall. T-Shirts designed by Elise Kimbrough draped the back of chairs. The decorations included ribbons, top hats, balloons and confetti in a color scheme of black, silver and blue. There was a scavenger hunt between dinner and a party given by Ellen Naquin. After Naquin's with the conclusion of a festive evening full of special activities, girls of both the Junior and Senior classes formed a special bond which cannot be broken. Juniors: Margaret Malone, Amy Howell, Gretei Harlan and Senior Sylvia Patrick, enjoy each others company during a break at Big Sis-LiP Sis '87.
