The show centered on a novice high school teacher in a New York City public school. Caren Simpson portrayed the young teacher as she confronted academically and emotionally troubled stu- dents. An additional cast of thirty-three backed her up, while other Thespians and apprentices handled sales, lighting, costumes, and make-up. Students, faculty, and parents all enjoyed the play. EHS students easily related to the students in the show, their adolescent problems, and their excuses for their lack of punctuality in turning in homework assignments. Teachers sentimentally recalled their first year in the profession and the trials and tribulations that accompanied the beginnings of their careers. Parents expressed sympathy for both species of classroom inhabitant. Up the Down Staircase was an invaluable experience for the actors, workers, and audience. 63
