Another Year, Another Class Spring rounded the corner, and May 16th rapidly approached. Seniors grew antsy. Teachers and administrators grew uptight. Graduation ended the seniors’ high school career, a joyous but sentimental occasion. The commencement ceremony was both beautiful and meaningful. The five valedictorians, Mary Anepohl, Julie Belcove, Anne Harvey, Michelle Hu, and Cathy Shubkin, composed a poem as a tribute to the Class of ’85 and to Episcopal High School. During the presentation of diplomas, the graduating seniors released some of their tension and anxiety. As the new alumni walked out of the chapel, they realized they would probably never again be together as a class, but they would always be bonded to every other member of the Class of ’85. Alison Cohn receives the Ralph K. Webster Award. This honor is presented each year to the senior who best exemplifies the ideal Episcopal graduate. Mary Falgout and John Giddcns enjoy refreshments at the reception Chris Atkinson gladly accepts his Episcopal following the graduation ceremony. Gruberger EHS Celebrates 20th Anniversary Over 1200 guests braved freezing temperatures to help celebrate Episcopal education at the Great Mall of the Bellemont Hotel on Monday evening, January 21. A cocktail buffet, dance band, balloons, and a gigantic birthday cake alight with candles welcomed the guests on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the founding of Episcopal High School. Phase I’s goal of $4 million will complete the campus quadrangle, as originally envisioned by the school's founders. The funds will be used for the construction of middle school classroom and arts and science facilities and an upper school science building. These new facilities will accommodate the additional students that are now being enrolled in the lower grades of the parish day schools. Phase II of the campaign w ill seek to raise an additional $4 million in endowment to support faculty salaries, provide financial aid, and maintain the physical plant. “The commitment of the first generation, or founders of this school,” said Er. Hancock, “was to establish an institution of learning which would strive for excellence in every respect. The commitment of the second generation to complete the campus is a sign of their dedication to furthering this mission.” Er. Ralph Webster, founding headmaster of EHS, reminisced about early days of the school. He spoke of the great dedication and commitment of those who were instrumental in the founding of the school and of the school's achievements, remarkable even for a school in existence for a much longer time than Episcopal. 33
