Big Sis — Lil Sis Heads for the Beach For weeks in advance, the senior girls prepared for the big day. They planned activities, rehearsed songs with beach themes, held secret meetings, and made posters and banners. The night before the festivities, Christy Gibbons remembers “Mrs. Hancock’s hospitality at the dinner in her home,” and Michelle I lu recalls the “rush and excitement of putting up posters, rolling houses, and decorating cars and lockers. By Friday morning everything was ready. On Friday the senior girls serenaded the junior girls w ith songs of love, friendship, and sisterly advice. Junior Carrie Wilder fondly remembers, “After seeing the presentation in Chapel, I had such a feeling of love and warmth that it did not matter who my Big Sis was. I felt close to all the girls.” A delicious luncheon, complete with umbrellas in the drinks, followed the show, and finally the Big Sisses were revealed. After appropriate screaming, crying, and hugging, the junior and senior girls continued the festivities in groups and as a whole, strengthening a special bond that can never be broken. 23
