ho- Suddenly — Everything Changes The Best of ! He is a stranger no longer His unsurpassed interest in us has endeared him to our hearts; the senior lunches, the Big Sis-Lfltle Sis dinner, his office open door policy — all reveal Father Hancock's genuine desire to be an actively and personally involved headmaster. As a result, the students and the administration are much closer; they possess mutual respect; they share a newly enlightened understanding Father Webster's loss did not split us asunder, it drew us together — hut only by dint of Father Hancock efforts Along with Father Ray, our inimitable chaplain, and the rest of the faculty and staff, this stranger has revitalized the school and given it a new look — indeed a new outlook Surviving Your Best Years In spite of Episcopal's change o f regime, its reputation for the highest academic standards has not been altered. Many teenagers view high school as a i four-year-long party , b ut although Episcopal students can have fun. they must first complete an enormous amount of work. Staying up to writ e a term paper (the inf nighter ), while ingesting massive amounts of coffee, and conducting two a.m. final exam cramming sessions are not uncommon occurrences — at least among those of us who procrastinate. However, Episcopal isn't merely an endless grind of difficult homework, impossible tests, and intense study; what makes life here special are? the .,. 7 •re. wit Added Touches t could cope academics f or resj most make of ex-tivity. be acquiring by helping ys, or sampling epicurean the International Club. As well as taking advantage of the diversity of organizations, our students also enjoy and participate in the various school-sponsored events such as Homecoming and Prom. Unique to Episcopal High School, however, and one of the most meaningful events to the junior and senior girls is Big Sis-Little Sis, a tradition that promotes a sense of unity between the two classes. The last major event before Prom and the seniors' graduation is the spring ricsta, which raises money for the school and celebrates its founding. This is but an incomplete listing of what makes Episcopal unique. How could we forget, for example, our athletes, who certainly have... Fiesta Recreates La Fete Cajun The 1983 Spring Fiesta, entitled La Fete Cajun, had a distinctly regional flavor. Apart from listening to the Navy band and enjoying native Cajun cuisine, revelers in the festivities were treated to raffles, a sponge throw, crawfish races, a n arcade area, an auction and various gift stands and booths. The senior girls discarded every vestige of the old traditions and invented new ones, meanwhile keeping the juniors in the dark, even telling them that Big Sis Lil Sis had been cancelled. The day's theme was Anchors Aweigh! Among the activities that greeted the surprised junior girls when the great day finally arrived were a production in the chapel, con- sisting of songs and skits, followed by a luncheon. The procedings therein will be kept strictly confidential, in the interest of not spoiling things for the rising juniors. Later in the day, the junior and senior girls boarded buses and took a road trip to the EHS football game at Whitecastle. Thus ended the first new Big Sis Lil Sis day, deemed a resounding success by both the junior and the senior girls. Six times a semester, the cheerleaders invent a new theme for each pep rally, and their ideas are always original and hilarious. Ranging from the annual Mr. Legs contest to the spirit recipe routine, the cheerleader skits put everyone in the right mood to go out and seize the victory. Summer Knights in November Juniors Present Talent Show Summer Knights in November, the talent show sponsored by the Class of 1985, showcased many talented students at EHS and raised nearly $2,000. First place honors in the Middle School went to Patricia Spaulding for Mickey! In the Upper School, Emilie Plauche won with her original choreography. The junior class thanks Mrs. Bonner for her assistance; their sponsors, Mrs. McCarron, Mrs. Kemp and Mrs. Franzino; and the many talented students who participated. Ashley Coles, Susannah Rolfs, Whitney Higginbotham, Amy Coates, Anna Coates, and Kristin Kaufman, who danced to Affair of the Heart, can now call themselves veterans of the junior class talent show. At the Chapel of the Good Shepherd Always an important if obligatory part of our spiritual lives. Chapel began to enjoy runaway popularity in 1983-84. Fr. Ray Vince, our chaplain, has the knack of speaking to us as adults — and he does so without patronizing us. Instead of interminable sermons, he articulates eloquent prayers and pithy reflections. He involves the students in the readings of the gospels. During the monthly eucharist we have the classical hymns, but for the regular Chapel services we join in simple songs, childlike but not childish in their simplicity. Fr. Ray's guitar playing adds a nice touch. It is obvious the Fr. Ray and Fr. Hancock have worked hard to make Chapel more enjoyable and meaningful, and we appreciate tneir efforts. The installation ceremonies of our new headmaster and chaplain were witnessed by many guests. Among those present were students, teachers, staff, and members of the Board. Photoby . Layne. Father Ray delights the student body with his rendition of It's Me. Our new chaplain has made music an integral part of our chapel services. Photqby J. Hill. 25 We Passed a Good Time, Cher Homecoming '84 — Knights on the Bayou — Is Resounding Success In this year of changes. Homecoming was one tradition that remained relatively constant. Although each grade made a decoration and brought it to the gym (instead of each homeroom making a door decoration), most of the Homecoming traditions were preserved: on Friday morning both cheerleader squads, the Highsteppers, and the teachers put on an exciting pep rally, complete with dances and skits; we played the Homecoming football game (against Springfield — and won!) Friday night, and the Homecoming court was presented during the halftime show. We let les bon temps rouler at the Homecoming dance Saturday night. Photo by Hill. 94 Share The Excitement Cheerleaders Rate Well at Camp Urging our teams on to victory are our E.H.5. cheerleaders, who are divided into the volleyball boy's basketball and football girl's basketball squads. Showing theirex treme dedication by practicing every day afterschool, they also sell spirit buttons and key chains, organize six pep rallies per semester, make signs and buttons for the players, coaches, and trainers — and even decorate the athletes' lockers and rooms for particularly important games. Not content with practicing only during the school year, our cheerleaders attended a special camp last summer and fared exceedingly well. The football squad received superior ratings every night, and the basketball squad won blue ribbons twice and red ribbons twice; both squads brought home a spirit stick. The cheerleading squads get ready to make a spirit C3ke at the U-High pep rally. Photo by . Hill. BOYS BASKETBALL VOLLEYBALL CHEERLEADERS — Jeanne Lee (Co. Capt.). The junior high cheerleaders inspire the seventh and eighth grade football, basketball and volleyball teams to triumph. The make buttons and signs, organize the junior high pep rallies, and meet every Thursday afternoon for practice. Also essential to EHS school spirit are the Highsteppers, who have traditionally performed at the pep rallies and during half-time at the home football games. This year, however, the Highsteppers have expanded their range and now dance for the basketball games as well. To revamp their image, tne Highsteppers not only have all new uniforms, but also are developing a different style of dancing, whicn includes pompon routines and novelty dances. Stuff ’84 “all the news that fits we print May 1984: Volume 1, Number 1 A Letter From the Editor Dear Readers, Stop looking around. No, your yearbook is not the only one with this funny colored paper in the center. Yes, we planned it like this. No, we did not have to insert this type of parchment because its cheaper and we ran out of money. This is a Magazine Section. I know it's something new, but I have absolute trust in y'all. (Oh! 1 did have to swallow my Northern pride when I typed that.) I'm sure you can adapt. The next 16 pages of your yearbook are filled witn exactly what the title says, STUFF. STUFF going on, and who's doing and thinking what. Now, before I get started telling you all about yourselves, there are a few things I'd like to say. No matter what anybody calls us (Preps, Brains, students of Egotistical High) no one can ever change the fact that Episcopal High School is a wonderful place to learn about living, loving, and learning. So, before we journey into our own small world, I want you to remember that the next time somebody puts down EHS you just tell them to STUFF it. Please laugh in about your school, what's all the right places. ojOutv su ta Editor, STUFF'84 Some Things Never Change, Or Do They? Every year the summer ends, and that lovely morning arrives when we have to get up early and go back to school, homework, and studying. It seems we get caught in the same routine every day, every week, every year. Some things never change, or do they? This year we started back to school with a new headmaster who was so excited to get to know us he had most of us come eat lunch with him in his office. A new chaplain started our days with an English accent and got us to sing in Chapel. We beat U-High! (U-Who?) and had a victory dance in the cafetorium. Mavbe things weren't perfect, how could they be with no new M A’S H episodes, but the 1983-84 school year greeted us with tons of new STUFF. Who ever said some things never change? What can these shoes tell us about our student body? For more information see page 115. Photo by C. Atkinson. Claire Crespo hugs Toby Massengale after the U-High victory. The EHS Knights beat the Cubs 21-0! Photo by V. McGuire. 113 • • • The EHS Experience is A Product of People You know, almost every yearbook that has ever been produced at EHS has tried to sum up what the Episcopal High Ex- Perience is all about. Well, 11 tell you, when you get down to the nitty gritty this coveted EHS experience is the product of nothing more (or less) than people. STUFF '84 sent out a questionnaire to the entire student body in the hopes of learning more about our Episcopal people. First, 1 think 1 should mention that somewhere along the line about 100 of the questionnaires disappeared. (O.K., so it was cold over the Christmas holidays and we burned a few.) Now, this means that you need to take into account that not every person's opinion is expressed in the results. And in regard to every person's opinion, we here at STUFF '84 want you to remember that we are not responsible for the irregular and sometimes bizarre answers of our fellow students. Taking these two facts in mind, we invite you to read on and see just what kind of STUFF the Episcopal Experience is made of... Students work diligently on their questionnaires. Photo by C. Atkinson The Result of Attitude Almost everyone will agree that a student's attitude toward his school is a direct reflection of his experience there. STUFF '84 asked the students of EHS this philosophical question Do you like school? 324 EHS students say yes, they like school, ana 200 say no, they do not like scnool. What surprised me though was that in a school that is preparing us for college life (and beyond), 16 people couldn't even decide and checked yes and no, and 56 people did not even answer the question. Now, one has to wonder if this indecisiveness has been instilled in us here at Espiscopal High School, or if we are afraid to answer such an important question because we don't know who will be reading our answer. Granted, our administration is tough, but so far no one who checked no has disappeared in the undercover of the night. Wouldn't you think that members of a college prep school would have the courage of their convictions? 40 people even wrote sort of next to this question. What kind of an answer is sort of ? And, because there are always those people who feel tne need to write in extra comments on questionnaires, another question was raised. The words not any more were scrawled on one paper. Are there those at this school that feel the system has let them down down, or (believe it or not) have become disillusioned with our educational adventures? The EHS experience is a product of all the people here, and a product of every person's attitudes, tastes, and behavior. No one person is an island at EHS — everyone influences someone else. Our attitudes (whether they be those of the 324 students who like school, or the one who no longer does) play an important role in the making of the Episcopal experience. What is your real attitude toward EHS, deep down inside? Hate? Love? Excitement? Apathy? Bitterness? Thankfulness? Think about it. I know it is a serious question. But even the most serious sides of life are not devoid of comic relief. Read on... You may recognize this face from The Rolling Stones new video Undercover of the Night. 114 Taste also plays an important role in the experience of high school. Whether we know it or not, we are all influenced by the taste of our friends. Not one weekend goes by that an Episcopal student does not indulge in the culinary delights of his or her desiring. (In layman's terms — we all like to pig-out.) But, have we ever stopped to examine our specific criteria as to what kind of food we consider good ? Well, in search of an answer to this question we asked you ... What is your favorite lunch menu? Needless to say, the majority of the student body picked the famous baked potato day as their favorite. But, the seniors all seemed to agree that their favorite lunch menu is We obviously have winning taste i n shoes. Photo by J. Hill. Seniors and juniors partake in a meal prepared by privately employed chefs. Photo by J. Hill A Question of Taste McDonald's. What insight does this give us as to the taste of our friends? To tell you the truth, not much. Now we can assume that our contemporaries are either obsessed with carbohydrates or that our parents are correct in their belief that our generation is nothing more than the product of fast foods. STUFF '84 also asked this question of taste ... What brand of tennis shoes do you wear? Perhaps there are a few at EHS who will contend that fashion plays an insignificant role in our lives, but in my opinion these people are even more fashion conscious because they spend all of their time trying to be unfashionable. (Did that make sense?) Anyway, 206 people at EHS wear Nike tennis shoes, and 139 people (predominately female) wear Tretorn. 72 people choose to wear Converse. Many other brands were represented, such as: Foot Joy, Puma, New Balance, Brooks, and Asahi. Two answers were so unique that they justified printing. In an attempt to protect the dignity of our fellow students, I will let the owners of these answers (and tennis shoes) remain nameless. One student prefers Generic tennis shoes, and another wears E.T. tennis shoes. (Ouch!) Now, I know you are all wondering What does this tell me about my friends? Unfortunately, it really only tells you what brand of tennis shoes your friends are wearing. O.K. so maybe this question wasn't as helpful as I had hoped. Let's move on. Can it be? Pilgrim Baked Potato Day! Photo by . Hill. What Is the EHS Experience? A Quest for Knowledge Of course, the EHS student's knowledge of trivia also makes for a well-rounded high school experience, so we posed this question to you ... Mister Rogers' first name is Roy Fred Ed Roger Mister Rogers has no first name As I may have mentioned before, there are always those unique individuals who feel the need to write in extra comments on question- naires. Andrew Davidson wrote by this question: I thought that was common knowledge. Well, Andrew, 320 EHS students might agree with your statement because they all checked Fred as Mister Rogers' first name. His name really is Fred Rogers. But unfortunately Andy, 320 kids does not the student body make. 170 people believe that Mister Rogers has no first name. 42 people believe that his first name is Roy. Sorry, folks, Roy Rogers was a cowboy and it is also the name of a restaurant that serves roast beef sandwiches — close but no cigar. 29 Episcopalites checked Roger as Mister Rogers' first name — Roger Rogers??? Oh, yes, and 39 people are suffering under the misconception that Mister Rogers first name is Ed — Mister Ed Rogers. I really don't think that wonderful childhood companion would appreciate being likened to a talking horse. So let's all give Fred an apology. Can you say, I'm sorry Fred? Sure, I knew you could. A Social Adventure Why don't we examine the social behavior of our student body, and see what that tells us. STUFF '84 asked y'all this question ... When do you bathe? Morning Night Once a week Never 200 Episcopal goers bathe in the morning, and 299 bathe at night. 91 bathe morning and night. (Of course, they are easy to spot on campus since their skin is permanently pruned.) 18 people wrote in other, whatever that means. And 22 people checked that they never take a bath. Can you believe that? I certainly can't. But, here is a little contest for you. If you can determine who the 22 people are who do not take baths (or at least want us to think they don't) you will win a lifetime supply of Ivory Soap. Here's a small hint: five of them are in the sixth grade (is that why we have a separate building for the Middle School?); two are seventh graders, four are in the eighth grade, one in the ninth, two in tenth, three in eleventh, and yes, one senior. Now, if you think that you have figured out who these people are please write down your answer and send it to: STUFF '84 P.O.Box 1984 Mexico City, Mexico The Police — EHS's favorite band. Their album Synchronici-ty bumped Michael Jackson's Thriller out of the 1 spot for a while this year. Many EHS students saw The Police when they were at the Centroplex Iasi fall. 116 ' The movie Risky Business was a hit at the box office in 1983, and star Tom Cruise wasa hit hereat EHS. Most of our female students would like to marry Tom, but Robert Redford's timeless appeal won him second place. Sorry, guys, we couldn't get a picture of Christi Brinkley. Experiencing Episcopal Do we here at EHS have proper respect for our leaders? 1 mean it is hard to have a good experience if you do not respect those that are in charge. Therefore, we asked this question... Who is Timothy Ehrlich? Founder of Scandinavia Inventor of the overhead projector Editor in chief of the ACCOLADE Starred in Ordinary People and Taps I must admit I was fairly proud of our student body. 356 people knew that Tim was the Editor-in-Chief of the ACCOLADE. 60 folks believed xhim to be the inventor of the overhead projector, 64 thought he founded Scandinavia, and 79 thought he was a star. Senior Kim Sindelar noted on her paper that Tim actually was the star of the EHS video, and Michelle Buck wrote that Tim was E.T. (I wonder what kind of tennis shoes she is wearing?) 63 people said they had no earthly idea who Tim was, 4 people didn't care and once again our decisiveness showed through with 9 people checking more than one answer. A first step in respecting your school leaders is to know who they are. Very good, kids! But, what about your answers to thisquestion... Father Ray most resembles Dudley Moore Yoda E.T. ‘ Paul McCartney Other It appears that a majority of the student body thinks that Father Ray resembles Yoda. 224 students to be exact. 127 people felt that Padre Ramundo looked more like Dudley Moore. 80 kids checked Paul McCartney, an understandable choice due to Father's musical ability. 75 of us picked E.T. as the closest Ray clone, but what really surprised me were the exceptionally strange answers put in the Other blank. Obviously, not every member of our student body is destined for stardom as a comedian. Proof of this lies in such witty answers as himself, Father Ray, and nobody. Commander Wirt got a holdofoneof the questionnaires and he wrote that Father Ray resembles Class; I like that answer. 4 people wrote that he resembles John Wayne. Now, I'm willing to admit that at first this may seem a ludicrous answer, but Father Ray does an excellent John Wayne impersonation. 4 other people think that Father Ray looks like Father Hancock. Quite a few of our students, however, wrote in, get this, Eddie Murphy. I'm not lying. Now, really folks, I certainly have a soft spot in my heart for the absurdities of life, but Eddie Murphy? Granted, Father Ray is a funny guy, but ... This answer has caught me so off guard that I am not even going to print the names of those individuals who wrote in this answer. Yoda isn't so bad, I mean Yoda was a great learned fellow. Dudley Moore isn't even offensive, but Eddie Murphy??!!! Please, this is a plea to the good will and common sense of our administration. We obviously need to crack down on mandatory eye examinations. We don't want to travel blindly through our Episcopal Experience. For those of us who will be leaving Episcopal this year, we hope that our time spent here will help us see more clearly in the future. But, for those who still have time left at EHS remember that there is a whole lot of STUFF going on here, and the best wat to have a good Episcopal Experience is to Experience Episcopal. 117 Three Great Additions It's the Lord's Thing Victory Dances Alumni Reception A great number of changes were made at EHS this year. Among these changes was the addition of new activities that were so successful they may turn from additions to traditions. First was the Christmas cantata, It's the Lord's Thing. Mrs. Karen Kirchner was the musical director, and Mrs. Mildred Bonner helped with the staging and dialogue. This was Episcopal's first attempt at musical theater, and it was a hit. A second hit at EHS this year was the addition of victory dances. These dances were sponsored by the Squires and held in the cafetorium after two home football games. A third addition was tne Junior — Senior — Alumni Reception held in the library. All those who had graduated in the last two years were invited to come back and visit with the Classes of 1984 and 1985, staff, and faculty. The food was great, and the reception was fun. U.S. Play Cracks Everyone Up Every spring the EHS Thespians do tneir best to turn the cafetorium into a theater, and every spring the Thespians live up to their celebrated past. Last March 10, H, 12, the Thespian's production of “The Egg and 1“ filled the com-bination lunchroom auditorium with loads of laughter in addition to the usual crowd of proud parents. “The Egg and I is the true story of the MacDonalds, a Seattle family, who bay a chicken farm in the foothills of the Washington mountains. (Yes, that's right, the MacDonalds had a farm!) The adjustment to torrential downpours, stubborn chickens, and nonexistent running water along with run-ins with Indians, skunks, and the kitchen stove almost convince Betty and the girls to leave, but in the end the MacDonalds are happy and satisfied with their new life. We tend to reject any deviation from the norm: the things we can't understand, or that we perceive as different. However, Episcopal High School is the anomaly. This has been a year of altered traditions, of numerous changes; and not only did we survive them, we thrived. As this first year of Fr. Hancock's stewardship draws to a close, we realize that Episcopal High School has not lost its flexibility. Our school is receptive to change. yfii . iiii - 220 And All Things Leave Us... This year concludes. The seniors are itching to go; the first part of their lives is over. Once we leave our alma mater, it will change, and we will change, beyond reconciliation. It is but a penultimate ending, though. As the pathway from childhood fades away, another appears: one that leads us closer to becoming successful, autonomous, interactive. Graduation is the point from which all faths diverge. And our piscopal High School background will surely send us in gooci directions. Or If They Do Not. Then We Leave Them. — ... So now we come together, dressed in black and white; We'll shake a hand and party through the night. This is the end, but it's also a beginning: So we'll go our separate ways — but we'll always have our High School Days. — Caren Taylor Simpson, High School Days 223 t
