In the past ten years this gentleman has com- bined his exquisite teaching skills and sense of leadership with a unique brand of humor. Chemistry can be a particularly frustrating subject, however this teacher manages to create a relaxed environment in which students have every op- portunity to learn. His most noted antics in class include the primate imitations atop desks and his anecdotes concerning his wild weekends. He has the students best interests at heart and never pressures them into something they are not capable of doing. ln a way he is our most important class leader, taking charge of many of the responsibilities concerning the senior year. Whether organizing the senior prom, or overseeing our disciplinary problems, he can always be coun- ted onto be a teacher, organizer, and friend. lt is our great pleasure to dedicate the yearbook of the Class of 1988 to Mr. Robert B. Parr. Appreciation 1 l l l l 0 V We as students tend to forget the people who malte our lives easier and even bearable at the Academy. Mrs. Carol Tassoni and Mrs. Mary Visich definitely fit this description. Mrs. T is in charge of relaying all messages to the upper schoolers as well as circulating our daily bulletin. Without her behind the scenes work, many students would lead much harder lives. Despite the frenetic pace she maintains, Mrs. T always finds time to talk to any student about their problems. We always know we have a friend in her and for that we're grateful. The process of applying to colleges can be very frustrating at times. ln order to be successful, one must be patient, cooperative, and prompt with required in- formation. Mrs. Mary Visich has been an invaluable part of the college scene at the Academy. She handles all phases of the applications and has saved many a lazy senior. Without her help it would be virtually impossible to maintain the suc- cess Episcopal graduates enjoy in college admissions. We are deeply indebted to her services and friendship. We, the class of 1988 would like to show our ap- preciation to Mrs. V and Mrs. L D, 1 X P? v -1 X :- 'l---Looking OVGI' US iv i ..-. 1 Tru ste es Wag Trustee Committee Choirmon Donold von Roden '42 First Vice Choirmon Jone R. Despite strong opening season optimism, the Churchmen could only salvage a mere .500 mark of 8-8-o. Although the final season record reflects a less than great season, the year was marked with many highlights, en- compassing incredible individual talent and strong teamwork. With some of the best players in the Main Line area, combined with strong leadership, the team showed a lot of growth and character. Here is a review of the team, player by players. Andy Christos, after scoring a 50 yard shot vs. 1966 State Champion Strath Haven, celebrated by spending the rest of the season as a spectator on the 50 yard line of the football field. Matt Evans' strong leadership could not be measured, nor could the number of stitches he received this season. Steve Strawbrldge was a strong midfielder, but was striken with a case of punching bag syndrome after the Ger- mantown Academy game. Todd Magargee was the best success story on the team, but some people said he let it go through his legs. Dave McMullin provided great intensity . . . by bringing his father to the games. Larry Flick, the senior fullback, didn't let anybody get by, except a freshman on Haverford Day. Christina Monacelli, the first female on the Varsity Soccer team, was unable to show her incredible chest trapping ability. Christian Smith had incredible finesse and skill, but spent too much time asking the referees stupid questions. Bill Marvin had two incredible headers vs. Radnor High School, but he fell victim to chronic asthma the latter half of the season. Mike Goldstein was a back-up goalie and had an incredible game against State Champion Lower Merion, but gathered too many penalties for shouting lines from Pink Floyd at the op- position. Mark Breuers had an inspirational effort against G.A., but due to several blue splinters in his backside, was hindered for the second half of the season. Glen Carey was a great stopper back and gave new definition to the word solid. Last but not least, Sean Casey was the stronghold of the midfield, and provided great inspiration. Also, seniorlason Freeman, and next year's captains, Evan Stein and Brett Elvis McGovern, deserve kudos for their efforts this year. IW! tl 'QM 1 - if 4.11 Soccer First Row: C. Monocelli, B. The team suc- cessfully defended its lnter-Ac cham- pionship and finished with a remarkable 28-2 record, cruising through its Decem- ber non-league schedule undefeated. Included among the victories were wins in the Hill School Tournament cham- pionship and the Williamsport Tour- nament championships, in which defeated perennial state power Williamsport. December also saw a vic- tory over Bonner, the eventual Catholic League Champion. During the Inter-Ac schedule, suffered two heartbreaking losses to Penn Char- ter, each by three points. However, swept through the rest of the league, in- cluding two narrow victories over Malvern. The end result was an 8-2 league mark and a tie for the league championship with Penn Charter. Episcopal was led throughout the season by Co-captains Paul Chambers and Brett Moore, both of whom finished the year averaging over 12 points a game. These two leaders were com- plemented by sophomore Eugene Burroughs, who averaged 19.7 points a game. Michael Milone and Patrick Chambers, two defensive standouts, rounded out the starting lineup. These five were relieved by sophomore Jim Shanahan and junior Jon Walsh, who provided valuable offensive spark. Bill Reedy, Michael Jordan, Chris Wyszynski, Tom Devirgiliis, and Chris Bradley helped the team with their constant hustle in practice and performed capably when called upon. Of course, Coach Dougherty's coaching brilliance and constant effort was the key to the team's success. At the end of the season, Paul Cham- bers and Eugene Burroughs received first team All-Inter-Ac honors, while Brett Moore received second team honor. Episcopal witnessed many regular season highlights including early victories over Bonner and Haverford High School. The strong start didn't last as the mid-season slump hit EA with great impact. Episcopal got the puck rolling once again, and finished the season with its first playoff berth in. . .well, along time. Many would attribute the team's success to the inspiring coaching of Mr. Bruce Stone. Stone received Coach of the Year honors for his efforts. But even with outstanding coaching the team is not complete without its players. This year was no exception. Each team needs to develop a strong defense, and this year Joe Auteri anchored EA's. With steady performances night in and night out, Joe earned All Star honors and played brilliantly throughout the season. Steve Pot- ter was also a very needed addition to the team. Whether between the pipes or near the door, Steve's leadership was invaluable. The rest of the defensemen were strong until the end of the season when un- fortunate injuries led to the team skating with 2 or 8 defensemen throughout the playoffs. Mike Campanale and Jason Mc- Dermott will lead the defense next year. Co-captain Matt Evans will be lost to graduation. Matt led the defense with 24 goals and his efforts earned him the Sportsmanship Award for the league. This perennial all-star was supported by senior Co-captain Chris Littlepage. Littlepage along with juniors Theo Yedinsky and Matt Luber led the offensive with nearly 50? of the team's goals. Chris's talents earned him the respect of the players, both on and off the ice. Theo and Matt were primarily the of- fensive threat for the team and their hard work earned them All Star positions. John Morres was always in the thick of things, Chris Johnson surprised his opponents with his deceptive skating style. Mike Gold- stein's hard work earned him the respect of the younger players and his leadership was truly invaluable to the team, not to mention his creative hairdo. Mike Paskin hung in there and worked hard throughout the season. We would like to give a special thanks to the underclassmen. Bill Scott, Brad Boyd, Scott Anderson, Ralph Sando, Carl Krum and Chris Mayer deserve much more credit than has been given to them. Without their hard work and dedication we would not have been successful as a team. si. !fT! ' fi Ki ff . ,ff,2 A Y 13- . - w. f'f1'z 445ff3f V-X .- aa 15, f Z +1 ' vi First Row: T. Yedinslsy. They looked very odd . . . lilse eslsimos clutching squash raclsets. Then Episcopal's first girl's squash club set to worls practicing. Three years later in 1988, the scene was very different. lt was 8:80 on a cold winter afternoon in 1988 when a group of seven girls, warmly bundled in matching EA Girls' Squash sweatshirts, confidently marched onto EA's squash courts. They loolsed very far from odd as they defeated their opponent, St. An- drew's. Obviously the past three years have seen much change in Episcopal's girls squash program. The girls who made the program what it is today talse much pride in its tremendous growth rather than the team's actual victories. Their St. Andrew's victory was their first and, un- fortunately, last, but their improvement throughout the season was incredible. Extremely well-coached and en- couraged by Miss Betsy Lippincott and always supported by former coach Mr. Bill Whelan, the seven-girl team learned and polished new squash slsills, but more importantly, learned integrity and sportsmanship. The ladder consisted of Cfrom 31 to 373 Captain Alix Golaslsi, Lauren O'Conner, Jen Haines, Brearley Rauch, Janine Sisals, Heather Boyd, and Jane Oberwager. Highlights included Alix, Lauren, Jen and l3rearley's single victories over challenging opponents, and Janine, astounded all by improving through her first year of squash so much as to be elected captain for 1 989. Next year with the graduation of four of the seven girls on the ladder, EA girls' squash will see even more changes. However with a solid foundation now established the team should fare very well. Little is expected from, or known about, this group of in- dividuals, which ran miles and miles every day in the snow, except on Fridays, when they competed indoors at the new Germantown Academy facility. However, after their awe-inspiring per- formance against rival Inter-Ac squads, the winter track team cannot but expect to be bombarded by acollades and ad- miration from their basketball-shooting, squash-squashing, lap-swimming, wrestler-pinning brothers and sisters, and from every fan of quality athletics in general. Episcopal's relay teams dominated the meets, subduing all adversaries in the 454400 and 4x1OO relays. Dave Marston, Kelly Kent, Cliff Cutter, and Dave Gordon held the best mile relay time in every meet, while the same team, sans Gordon but with the ad- dition of super frosh, Steve Murray, con- sistently won the 400-meter relay. The team posted many propitious individual performances as well. Cutter, the fastest man in the Inter-Ac, outran all other sprinters in the 50 yard dash, and Kent proved himself to be one of the Inter- Ac's most talented high hurdlers. Seniors Seth Slotkin and Dave Bergen placed highly in the half-mile and quarter-mile races. Joel Neigh and Morgan Baird ran consistently well in any event. Murray ran some very encouraging miles, and was the consensus choice for the team's most valuable freshman. f Q is X v I Q . . as if? W ignwfwy F- C Coach Bill Burdick 11 9 12 15 19 22 26 29 30 4 6 10 13 19 21 This year's track season proves to be an exciting one. The Varsity team suffers from sheer lack of numbers for the second year in a row. Fifteen members is not a good matchup to Penn Charter's 40 man roster. Episcopal, has however, excellent athletes and if we can take first, second, or third places in each event we should be able to compete. With the talent present this looks like a realistic goal. Co-captain Dennis Nicholson will show his expertise in the long, high and triple jumps as well as the 400 and relay run- ning events. Nicholson, a man dedicated to the track season like no other, will sport his new Nike Zoom Ultra Spikes which should provide the extra edge over competition. Also in the Zoom Ultras is fellow Co- captain Dave Marston. A Tri-captain and triple running letter winner, Marston ex- cells in the mile and 2 mile events. In his past two track seasons, he has not failed to place in the championship meet. This talent alone might seem like enough to win a meet, but Episcopal's talent goes for beyond this. Cliff Cutter, the junior standout from Winter Track is looking for repeated per- formances in the 100 and 200 yd. dashes. His second and first place finishes in last year's championship meet, will provide an excellent starting point for a strong season. Also adding to the list is another Win- terTrack standout, Kelly Kent. He will be a strong hurdler in the league meets as well as in the non-league meets. Other members, like Matt Carpenter, Dave Gordon, Steve Murray, Kurt Hoff- man, Rocco Galleli and Jeff Venzie, will increase the team's potential for an ex- cellent season. , First Row: S. Devlin, B.
