CROWNOVER Set'-e'ar-, Tl-TDMAS M. EARNSHAW The sluden' Veslry during Jrhe year l947-48 was more acrive lhan in perhaps any previous year, As usual, lhe lessons were read in chapel by members of lhe Veslry, and lhe senior members were cruciiers. ln addilion, 'rhe members were divided info groups of lwo, each group being responsible Tor The general mainlenance oi The Chapel for a specified weelc. Confinuing an innovalion inlroduced lasl year, one service a monlh was conducred by lwo of The senior members. These services seemed lo be accepled favorably, and if is hoped lhal 'rhey will conlinue. The members ol The Veslry were called upon 'ro serve as ushers a+ various religious iunclions of The Academy, including The Chrislmas pageant +he corporale communion services, fhe Academy Service, and fhe Lenlen presenlalion service. The charily drives sponsored by The Veslry were for The mosl parl guile successful. CHOIR Under the dynamic leadership ot Mr, McClelland, this year's choir had more voices than in any previous year. In spite ot having only two atternoon rehearsals a week, the choir was able to sing an anthem almost every Friday. Some ot the more well-lcnown anthems sung were Franclcs Psalm I50, Haydns The Heavens Are Telling, Mozart's Gloria in Exelsis, Farmers Great and Marvelous, Ippolitott-lvanotts Bless the Lord, and Mendelssohns O for the Wings of a Dove. The most memorable services in which the choir toolr part were the Christmas Pageant and the Academy Service. The tormer, held on December I8 and I9, was acclaimed by many to be the best ever presented at the Academy. Its great success was mainly due to the untiring ettorts ot Mr. Sumner and Mr, Harris, who directed the costuming and the pertormance, and ot Mr. Neathery, who directed the spectacu- lar lighting ettects. The choir sang three anthems and assisted greatly with the congregational singing ot the Christmas carols. The Academy Service, held on April 25 at the Church ot the Redeemer, was the scene ot the choirs best performance ot the year. ln this large church, the choirs voices were able to ring out with spirit and volume, and the service was one ot magniticent beauty. Great credit is due to Mr. McClelland and Tom Earnshaw in their work with the chapel music, Mr. McClelland, in addition to his teaching responsibilities, spent much time with the choir and has done a superb iob ot directing. Tom, who served his second year as Academy organist, tultilled his duties with remarkable distinction, in addition to accompanying Mr. McClelland at most ot the rehearsals and keeping up with his many other duties around school.
