What has been our attitude toward school and the edu- cational opportunities offered? Have we made the most of our time? Have we done our best? I trust that each student can honestly say that the present year has been a profitable one scholastically and that the memories of the varied activities during the past nine months will be pleasant ones. This year our school has had a marked en- rollment increase. Next year we expect a con- tinued growth. The larger school will make possible not only an enlarged school curriculum and better educational op- portunities but also an expansion of extra-curricular activities. To each student who will not return to the Ephrata High School next fall, l extend my best wishes for success in whatever enterprises he may choose to undertake. To those who return, l solicit a sincere interest in scholastic achieve- ment and a loyal support and participation in the extra-curricular program of the school. ,ws Q Mr. Moodhe Principals Message As we came to the close of another school year, each members of the student body should ask himself a few pertinent questions, such as: Have l tried my level best each day to improvemy ability to get along with others? Have I tried my level best each day to merit the approval and respect of my teachers and fellow students? Have I tried my level best each day to turn in a perfect assignment in each class? lf you can answer these questions in the affirmative, then you can count the past year as one well spent. lf you can not answer these questions in the affirmative, then resolve now to make next year a year of opportunity, a year in which you will strive to become the best citizen of your school. To the Seniors I say Farewell and God Speed. May your path be ever upward and onward, remembering your class motto 'Today we follow, tomor- row we lead.' To the luniors l say, Welcome to your place of leadership. May that leadership be of equally high quality as your predecessors. To the Sophomores I say Now that you succeed to the second ranking class of the school, your burdens and obligations as citi- zens of your school become more involved. May you measure up to the high standards ex- pected of you. To the Freshman Class l say, The past year has probably been the most difficult year of high school. The lessons learned this year both in class as a student and out of class as a mem- ber of a high school student body are your foundation for a good future growth. May you remember them well. As we peep into the private lives of our former graduates, fClass of '47,, that isJ from Ephrata High School we see many things of interest happening to them. We, the three best known peeping Toms of Ephrata, look into the windows as we pass by and stop in astonishment at what is going on in one small establish- ment. Why it's none other than Ralph Thompson, and he is working on another experiment. Although he is known as one of the leading scientists of our time, we, rush by, for you never can tell what will happen with Thompson and his experiments. If you ever hear of a whole town blowing up you'l1 know than Ralph was there. When we reach the residential section we hear a terrible row. Then breathe a sigh of relief. Well, have you guessed it? Lyle and Patt are having a little argument over who is to wash the dishes. They seemed to get along so well in 47, but it seems that after ten years of married life, things change. H1rry Drittenbas is sitting at the table taking it all in. Harry is a good friend of the family, also Godfather to all the kids. Instead of the customary one child to a Godfather, he is Godfather to six. It ceztainly seems appropriate, too, as Harry is the family physician. We decided to go in and have a visit with them. Harry gave us a lot of information about some of the other classmates. He told us that Donna Guffin had gone back to her old job as soda jerk at the drug store. She was still the same old Donna. She had decided to give up her career as lady senator and go back to her old love of mixing up things. Food, I mean. Donna also had another job on the side. She was Cirolyn Porteris agent. Porter was still trying to convince every- one she was a great artist and all the houses in town had her paintings in them. Donna gave away the paintings with every big sale at the drug store. The sale had to be as big as ten cents before you could get one. Then she wondered why the drug store kept losing iris business. Harry also cold me that Don Ebbutt and Lee Blanchard are lifesavers at the city swimming pool. They are quite thrill- ing to watch when going in for the rescue. Lee pushes Don in and they both swim out for the victim. Then Lee puts the rescued person on top of Don and tows him in. It works every time. They are quite popular and always have a large audience to watch them. Well, we had to leave Eakis house and continued on with our walk. We strayed up to Ephrata Heights and who do you think we saw? Of all people it was Salley. That's our gal. She was sitting up there with her long range telescope still looking for her man. We interrupted her long enough to have a short talk and she told us some more things about our old class. She said her old friend Hank Romig is a crooner in the Big Vaudeville in town. He is the star of the program, along with Marion Lemon and Erma Chance who have a great routine. They sing duets while playing the piano and dancing all the same time. They are very good and always draw a large crowd. Speaking of shows have you listened to your radio Iately? If you have you probably have heard the sad story of lVIinnies Many Men. The star of the show is none other than Bonnie Jones. Her supporting cast is Joe Kuhns and Darrel Hayes. They all were discovered by a talent scout when they participated in the Senior play and had been acting ever since. We saw a picture of them and you should see Darrel's mustache now. Nothing could compare with it .... Not even A1 Trieber's. Oh, by the way have you heard about Al? He and Walt Lyons, are running for Senator. It's pretty hard to decide which one is going to win. Pauline Heer is campaigning for Al though, so it does make a difference. Pauline is in tha movies now and has turned down an offer with them for five hundred thousand dollars. She says she is waiting for something better. Who knows .... maybe it's a sen- ator. By the way have you seen her last picture, NThe Little Giant, Garvin Stewart is her leading man. Garvin is every boyis idol in the U. S. and all the boys wear platform soles and heels patterned after his. They all want to be giants, too. Don Bluhm, they say, is doing quite well as a salesman for Fuller Brush, but I hear that he makes more selling the towels that Walt Lyons swipes from the hotels on his campaign trips. Say that reminds me, Joe Litei went to New York on a business trip the other day and went to see Jackie Hater, who is modeling for Powers. Joe hasn't come back since he saw Jackie modeling. They say he forgot what he went for. We finally left Salley and went back to town. We were crossing a street when whiz! we were almost run over . . . It was a taxi and it stopped to see if we were hurt. The driver stepped out and 'we just about faintecl. It was our old pal Janice Schill. We asked her what she was doing driving a taxi. She said that she worked for Jack Adams and Walt Nicks who really owned the taxi Co She was really their secretary but with help so scarce she had to drive too. She told us to get in and then drove us all over town. She informed us about the rest of our friends. June Crewse teaches school. She enjoys children and likes teaching the first grade but she truly wishes that something could be done with the behavior of Joyce Porte: s twins. Joyce, the former Joyce Gunder, just doesn't have time to disci- pline them. She and her husband own a trucking business and Joyce drives, while her husband does the secretarial work. June also teaches Claudine Jones, girl. She went to see Claudine the other day and was pleased to see that she has been chosen by the Good Housekeeping.Magazine as the perfect housewife. In the same issue of the magazine Betty Hill is pos- ing for a telephone ad. It seems that Betty had been seen by the supervisor of the telephone company and had been chosen to model for their ads. Norma Robison also works for the same company and on her sdays off she twirled her baton with the band in the city park. Do you know who the leader of that band is? Kenneth Knight . . . we never knew he had such talent in those days, did we? He looked very happy and also very handsome in his band uniform. Also in the band is Wilma Jones. She does very well on the tuba. After she graduated Wilma became famous for her book, Learn- to Play, the Tuba or, Ye Gad, Where Is She. Janice finally took us home and as I was the last one to get out I had to pay the fare. I realized just how much the city had grown and how long we had talked when I saw it. But ii seemed worth it to learn so much about my friends and companions of 1947. 23 Simlaix JUNIORS First Row--Ruth Kriete. janet Lunn, Doris Swanson. Shirley Affleck, Robert Burd, Vernon Harmon. Coach Roth fashioned a team which was able to defeat every one of its oppo- nents with the exceptions of Chelan, Omak, and Dryden. The season was launched by the winning of their first three games from Waterville, Quincy and Moses Lake. They were not so lucky in the next game and met defeat by the strong Dryden five. ln the County Tournament the Tigers came out on top, by winning the traveling trophy for the second time. ln the District Tournament, however, after winningtheir first two games the Tigers lost to Chelan in the championship game and received third place. After a poor start with a defeat by Moses Lake and Wenatchee our morale was lowered some, but we are still pulling for a place in the honor- ary finals. The season so far does not look very promis- ing, but We hope that in the near future our baseball team will be better established. TENNIS This year we made a fresh start in tennis, under the coaching of Mr. Moodhe, who is a good player himself. Although none of the players had had much experience, we had a fairly successful season. The players, both boys and girls, did their best and had lots of fun playing. C erm fmem loan Bush, lo Harbeston, and Donna Loree were chosen by popular vote ot the students to lead us in our school yells. The three girls did a very good job in leading the yells at our football and bas- ketball games. The student body de- cided they wouldn't elect a Yell Queen because ot the fact that the three girls were all equal in their ability to lead the yells. We wish to express our gratitude toward the girls for the fine job they did this year. ' PEP CLUB Back RowfDoris Correll. Shirley Affleck, Donna Guffin, Carolyn Porter. Pauline Heer. Supple' menting one semester of English, the course is designed to encourage the stu- dent to think logically, and to express, himself clearly and convincingly: as well as to develop an analytical approach to the problems which confront him. There are three major divisions in the Speech course: Public Speaking, Parliamentary Procedure and Argumentation, and lnterpretation and Drama- tics. By reason of a briet acquaintance with these phases of speech, the stu- dent is able to improve recitations., reason logically, and appreciate more deeply that which he hears. A direct result ot the Speech Course has been participation in the Ameri- can Legion Oratorical Contest and the Toastmasters Public Speaking Contest. Next year it is hoped that through this activity, we may produce more plays, participate more widely in contests, and give even greater opportunity for students to overcome that greatest of all school problems, speaking. 44 eamfi 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. 8. 9 'o 11 12 13 '4 I5 I6 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 15 26 Three Stooges Practicing up MARION??
