SUBDSeoDNEsTay eS a soe Me y iy i 2a SANE ogo a ea SUDBURY, MA 0 1984 With a big smile and a friendly welcome, Mrs. McKenna greeted all Curtis students to the 1983-84 school year. During her second year as principal of Curtis, she brightened the classrooms she visited and the halls through which she walk- ed. Her new tradition of leading the whole student body in the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem on Monday mornings inspired in the students a feeling of patriotism and a pride in our American heritage. This year was a successful one because of her leadership. ‘Congratulations, Mrs. McKenna, on another suc- Mrs. J. McKenna cessful year.” Principal ADMINISTRATION a. ar: Mr. R. Knapp Vice-Principal Mr. Knapp, Vice-Principal of Curtis, kept students aware of all upcoming events at Curtis during the four lunch blocks each day. He was always concerned with student interests and encouraged each and every student to develop a school pride and join in the school activities. — P. Amidon R. Benson A. Eppling D. Boatman J. The band rehearses two forty-five minute periods per week. Students spend much of their own time in private lessons, practicing music and attending extra rehearsals to prepare for their concerts. The band performs many concerts during the year for a variety of audiences, such as, the Annual Winter Concert, a concert at Faneuil Hall, a performance at the Senior Citizens Drop-In Center, a yearly exchange concert, the annual Spring Concert, and a tour of the elementary schools. This year, the exchange concert is with the Dedham Junior High School. Selected students will perform solos and other chamber music at the Curtis Spring Festival. Some students participate in musical groups outside of the school program such as, the Northeast District Music Festival, the Massachusetts Youth Wind Ensemble, and the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra. This year, the following students participated in the MMEA Northeast Junior District Music Festival: Samantha Costello, principal flute in Orchestra; Gwen Baker, first flute in band; Nisha Purushotham, third clarinet in band. These students were selected from auditions held in Littleton, including students from fifty-two different towns. The band is currently working to attend a state- wide music festival during the 1984-85 school year. wo . sy Sik oat 4 io e 7 yin Va’! iq ® bit ORCHESTRA The Curtis String Orchestra has had a busy and successful year beginning with the annual Winter Concert in December. We started the school year with a wonderful visit to Lowell where we learn- ed how old machinery was run. At the same time, both classes were working busily on a flower unit in science. We col- lected and dried flowers so that we could study them. In social studies we played an interesting game called Current Events. As the year went on and fall turned into winter, the Smith-Stuefloten Team wrote many compositions. These included an essay for the Edaville Railroad Contest. Later, when the results came in, they made six people on our team joyous. The prize for each winner was three tickets to see the actual railroad and cranberry bogs. We wrote not only compositions but book reports too. These included classics, biographies, research reports, and, of course, pleasure reading. As the snow started falling, we wrote and presented some winter poems. We also began a new unit in science on optical il- lusions. This year, Math was very in- teresting. We learned many new concepts and to help our speed and accuracy, we had Mad Minute fact tests. Also, to en- courage our mathematical thinking, we had Math Challenges along with Math Meets. Although we did several interesting math projects, the Holiday Shopping Spree was very exciting. Early in February we had a guest speaker, Mrs. Ellis. She taught the team many interesting facts about George Seurat and his style of painting called poin- tillism. After we had learned more about both subjects, we wrote a composition on Seurat and painted a pointillism picture. Throughout the whole year the Smith- Stuefloten Team has done many exciting things and enjoyed many events like par- ties, field trips, and class projects. Most important of all, the whole team enjoyed the year and learned many new things. Ms. Stuefloten 54 FIRST ROW: (left to right) Austin B. HURD DOHAN The Hurd-Dohan Team did some very interesting things this year. We performed a play which was a great success. Also, we went on many field trips to such places as the Science Museum, the Danforth Museum, and to the historical buildings in Lowell. The Hurd-Dohan Team did yummy things, too. For example, we had a food festival and a Christmas party. In Science, the team created drug posters for the Rotary Club and had debates about presidential candidates and whether or not marijuana should be legalized. In addition, we presented dress-up book reports and country reports. The Hurd-Dohan Team of 1983-84 was full of class spirit and worked well together. Our work on Annie, in which the whole team was involved, is a good example of our terrific Cooperation. Mr. Hurd — = Mrs. Dohan SIXTH GRADE DRUM CLANCY The Drum-Clancy team has gone on many field trips to the Museum of Science, the Danforth Museum, and to the play, Hello Dolly, put on by the Lincoln-Sudbury students. During social science periods we have learned about the French, Camayura, Iraqi, and Japanese cultures. In science we have worked on a computerized archeological unit. To celebrate Hanukkah and Christmas seasons we worked on a shopping spree in math and put on a play called “‘The Festival of Lights.’’ In February, the Drum- Clancy team participated in having Secret Pals to celebrate St. Valentine's Day. 56 FRONT ROW (left to right): Caeli Smith, Lynn Vifquain, Christine Consales, Kristin Welch, Joshua Fox, Andy Wynn. Team. One of the most interesting units MISSING: Greg Bates, Jodi Nix, Laurel Wyman. was on archaeology. During this unit we studied how early people lived. We visited the Revolutionary War Cemetery and copied the inscriptions on the gravestones. Later we compared and graphed the infor- mation. On our walk back from the cemetery to Curtis, Miss Lewis pointed out m= different kinds of architecture. In the spring he. we took a walking tour of the historic buildings of Marblehead. In other subjects such as geography, math and social studies, we did interesting things, too. In geography, we studied the countries of the world, as well as the states == and provinces of the United States and = Canada. We also learned about bodies of | water, national parks, and cities. In math, ; Miss Lewis further enhanced our F knowledge by taking us to the computer ' lab weekly. We also played mental com- $j; putation games on Friday. In social | studies, besides studying various cultures of the world, especially the Mayans, we spent time in the spring exploring various careers. During this unit we had guest speakers and engaged in discussions about how to choose a career. Finally, one brief but fun-filled period of ; the year saw both our classes advance to the finals in the sixth -grade Volleyball Tournament. All of these qualities make up the spirit of the Walker-Walsh- Moor team. The team has worked well on several activities throughout the year. In October one of the most successful happenings was our book party. Each student dress- ed up as the main character in a book and participated in a discussion led by one of the team’s parents. For United Nations Day each student picked a country, studied its government, religion, education, customs, made a flag, and brought in a food dish from that country. Exchange students from Lincoln-Sudbury High School completed the day’s experience. For Valentine’s Day, our class held a special project called ‘‘Secret Pals’. A week before Valentine’s Day each student drew aname and that person became our secret pal. During the week we did special things for that person. On Valentine's Day we found out who was our secret friend. Another special event for us was the visit to our class by Susan Wornick of News- Center 5 to discuss what it’s like to be a reporter. So many activities filled our year. Our team’s visit to Nature’s Outdoor Classroom at Sandwich, Massachusetts, during the week of April 30-May 4 to study environmental education was perhaps the best experience of all! The daily field groups and evening activities such as debating, skits and square dancing will be remembered by all of us. FRONT ROW: Noel Hall, Ebony.
