ENTERPRISE HIGH SCHOOL REDDING, CALIFORNIA The Spring of Our Lives ■ . . Then the green grass sprouted, And the little red flowers blossomed, The pine tree pointed his finger to the sky, And the oak spread out his arms, The lakes cuddled down in the hollows of the ground. And the rivers ran down to the sea; And God smiled. . . Then into it he blew the breath of life. And man became a living soul. from “The Creation” James Weldon Johnson True friendship is a plant of slow growth and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity . . . Washington-Letter, 1783 Great souls by instinct to each other turn, demand alliance, and in friendship burn. Addison-THE CAMPAIGN 4 Peace rules the day, where reason rules the mind. Matters may be submitted for discussion by any student, faculty member, or administrator, ail of which are represented on the board. After discussion, the board may make recommendations to the appropriate body as to action to be taken, and although not given specific powers to formulate and enforce laws, it is hoped that this new organization will eliminate some of the confusion and misunderstanding which develop due to lack of communication. Ah. remember When we were young and free, and so was the wind? We, together. Ran across green and fertile plains Through tall and densely lightened forest along sandy, damp beaches, and so did the wind. But we are old now and, ah yes, we remember We ran, oh how we ran. With the wind at our sides We were young and so was the wind. Yes, we are old now But how old the wind? Did she age as we did? Or did she remain young To run wild and Free with other children as she did with us? and will they look back and say to one another. Ah, remember When we were young and free and so was the Wind? Donna Maddox In September of 1968, Donna Maddox, Shelley Roberts, Debby S. Johnson, Jennifer Brewen, and Kathy Van Doren met with a fatal accident on their way to a football game in Susanville. The students of Enterprise were shocked and grieved by the loss of these well- known and well-liked classmates. It is to the memory of these five girls that this book is lovingly dedicated. 46 £ fL Peggy Loucks Betty Lukes Shawn Lyman Laura MacLellan — m Thomas Mark Mark Matson Christine Mattison Gloria Mayfield Philip Lenscr Michael Leonard Marjorie Lesser Peggy Lewis Scott Mangum Toni Maealdi Michael Mah on Steven Main Larry McBrayer Pamela McCarty Cathy McCutcheon Linda McCutcheon Kenneth Miles Stephen Mitchell Brenda Moats Tim Mook Patrick Mooney Larry Moore Sharon More field Patricia Morelock 50 Ronald Norris Kathy Norton Julie Odenwciler Christine Olson Jcannic Palmer Diana Parham Mitchell Park Susan Parker Jack Morrison Gail Morton Maryann Murray True Myers Jack Nelson Clayton Newman Marian Nicol Audrey Noble Michael Olson Amy Oulman Myra Pack Mavis Padget Jonny Parrish Floyd Pearson Rosilec Peck Lynnette Perkins Robert Perkins David Peterson Erika Pevehouse Patricia Pitcock Sherril Pitts Susan Prather Judith Proctor Craig Phillippi Patricia Proctor Darrell Pruett Wayne Pullen Bobettc Pur sell Joyce Raine Mike Ramey Richard Ray Jean Redner Susan Rhoades Deborah Richey Rex Rider Sheila Riley Damelle Scarbrough Cathy Sharrett William Shine Stacy Shriver Kathleen Rouse Jeanie Sadow Bruce Salter Edwin Sandberg Linda Sty mus Phillip Sutter Patrick Taylor Cynthia Terry Louise Stone Kenneth Stoppenbrink Gary Stromberg Jan Sturgess Julie Silva William Simmons Vicky Sisk Deborah Smith Katherine Smith Larry Snelling Lari Solomon David Sowder Joan Steel Linda Steele Patricia Stewart David Stockton ► 54 Gherald Tessier Jerri Thomas Susan Thomas Sandra Thompson Donald Tilley Sharon Timpe Michael Toney Mark Twitchell George Vanderpool Patricia Van Dyke Tully Van Slykc Romona Van Wormer Billie Vickrey Alexis Von Dachenhausen Rick Wade John Wagoner Chafe Walker Corinne Waller Michael Ward Sharon Ward - W 55 Sarah Watson Jcri Webster Susan Webster George Webb Seniors not pictured Gail Bacon Dale Cox Karen Klidies Sue Webster Lynnoa Bonner Steven Davis Kelly McClelland Michelle Westlake Stanley Bowen Stephen Duncan Vicki Millennor James Bremer Stephen Hari Sherman Ritchie Robert Whitman Gary Brunett Cheryl Husted Michael Todd Chris Cadigan Joann Kissinger Robert Walker 56 Graduation 1969 He who remains cheerful in spirit and sees only the good side of all things, who never allows himself to be spiritually downcast but keeps his head high and courage in his heart, he sets in motion those fine, still powers, which make every step through life easier for him. Mark Matson Heads Fall Student Council At the beginning of the 1968-1969 school year, Student Body President Mark Matson outlined his objectives for student government during his administration. One of his major goals was to provide activities through Student Council that would involve greater numbers of students. One area of change was to expand the field from which school organizations may draw dance bands, hopefully to provide more variety. Other changes were to be in the areas of constitutional revision, and in activities planned jointly by the Student Council and the various clubs and organizations within the school. Matson's main objective was to make student body government more meaningful through greater student involvement. Mr. Ash interjects an appropriate comment concerning the Representative Assembly. 93 Representative Assembly Has Busy Year This year the Representative Assembly branched out in an effort to involve more students in the student government. Representatives were encouraged to be creative in the administering of the government, and, as a result, several worthwhile new activities were instigated which, hopefully, will be continued in the coming years. Two new activities, the pumpkin-cutting contest and the fostering of a needy child abroad, were notable successes. It is my hope that the representatives were stimulated by their activities in Representative Assembly to a continuing interest in student government. Student Court Upholds The Law This year’s Student Court strived to attain three major goals. They hoped to establish precedent pertaining to court procedure, worked on the revision of the statute laws and worked to set up suitable penalties for those students convicted of violations. These were done in an attempt to make Student Court play a larger part in the functioning of student government. FRONT ROW: Dean Moyer, Bill Simmons, Rick Taylor. BACK ROW: Dave Peterson, Mary Lukes. He felt that giving students a greater opportunity to participate in various activities other than academics creates a more pleasant school atmosphere. During his term in office, Broshears attempted to achieve several goals, including the revival of interest in school clubs and organizations and the maintenance of school pride, a tradition that has existed at Enterprise for many years. A heavy line provided good blocking for a powerful rushing attack with Nick Gardner and Dave Burkhardt doing most of the ball carrying. As the big team hit the road most of the season they met powerful foes from Grants Pass to Chico and from Areata to Reno. Though winning in stastistics they met defeat on the score board. But overall it was a great season with a record of three wins, five losses and two ties. Hornets' Pre- Season Play Shows Promise The 1968 Varsity opened the season with a 32-12 defeat by Grants Pass and a 20-20 tie with Areata. These scores were not indica- tive of the Hornets' performance, though. In both games they accumulated more total yardage than their opponents. Linebacker Wayne Pullen (62) makes a vain attemp to bring down a Grants Pass ball carrier. Homet star Nick Gardner (44) sweeps right end for a short gain. 166 A Chico defensive player struggles to pull down Nick Gardner after he picks up yardage around the end. El IS Runs Over First Two NAL Foes The Hornets opened up their league play with an easy victory over a badly outclassed Susanville team. Enterprise heavy defense held Lassen’s weak offense to a net gain of only twenty-six yards. The only score of the game came in the second quarter on a thirty yard pass from Lenny Baxley to Rick Kendall. Bruce Miller went in to kick the extra point. The Chico game was one of the most exciting games of the season. The hard rushing Hornet offense led by Nick Gardner pushed ahead for three touchdowns. The Chico passing attack threatened in the second half. They only scored once. The game ended with a nineteen-to-seven victory for the Hornets. Lenny Baxley moves in to clip down a Chico pass receiver. 168 Enterprise, Shasta End in Dead Ileat The Enterprise Hornets went into the Shasta game with a victory in mind. Hopes went up as the Hornets scored first. But Shasta came back fast to even it up. Nick Gardner put Enterprise ahead again as he broke loose for a fifty-five yard touchdown. Again Shasta tied it up. Tense minutes of hard-fought football with penalties mounting brought the draw battle to a close. LEFT: Strong Hornet defense headed by Gary Newman, Jerry Hunt, Gary Anderson, and Bruce Kimbrough stops Shasta on the goal line. Enterprise bench watches closely as measurement is taken on the field. Nick Gardner breaks loose from Shasta linemen, picks up a block from Jerry Hunt and heads for a touchdown. 169 Defense Toughens to Salvage Tie Bruce Kimbrough (64) makes key interruption to halt Shasta drive. Safety Lenny Baxley breaks up a crucial pass play. Shasta's Gene Maionchi is brought down after short gain. Jack Nelson (26) brings down Shasta’s Rich McCartin after a substantiil gain. 170 Red Bluff Loss Portrays Dismal Side Of Season LEFT: Quarterback Lenny Baxley b dropped for a loss by Spartan defenders. Lenny Baxley (16) stops a Red Bluff ball carrier after a short gain. Cubs Take Final Game by a Touchdown Lenny Baxley can’t stand the sight of Hornets' blocking. 172 Coaches Russell and Ken scout team. Lenny Baxley pulls down Cub ball carrier. The Enterprise Hornets, hoping to pull a big upset against the first-place Anderson Cubs, managed only to give them a last-quarter scare. Powerful Cub rushing outdid the Hornet defense, while bad breaks kept the offense from scoring. The fourth quarter belonged to the Hornets as Nick Gardner plunged for one score, followed quickly by another involving a pass from Lenny Baxley to Kelly Berry. The clock ran out before the Hornets could score again. Fans come alive as team finally scores. 173 ERONT J- B GUddc ’ B Main B Jones’ B- R- Stewart, B. Randolph, D. Woodard, G. Anderson. D. Benson.
