It is a program designed to provide the guidelines of citizenship. But above all, it teaches that in order to claim the rights and privileges of citizenship it is necessary to accept the duties and obligations of responsible citizenship. To preserve our system of government, Americans must understand and appreciate it. The Boys’ State Program has this as its aim. Does it succeed? Dave answers that ques- tion by presenting an excerpt from the Boys' State Creed: ’’American citizenship is my most priceless possession. I believe in the constitutional form of government of the United States of America—which guarantees me the right to worship God as I choose and as a citizen equal opportunity, and equal educational rights. ’It is my obligation to participate in and contribute my effort to the civic and political welfare of my community, state and nation. ” Dave Grokenberger Karen Nystrom Girls’ State Karen Nystrom was Enterprise's representative to the 1967 session of the California Girls' State, sponsored by the Ameri- can Legion Auxiliary. She attended the session along with 560 other girls from all over the state. For one week, at the Uni- versity of California Davis Campus, the delegates worked at different levels of state government. It is the President’s duty to assure to the student body that a truly representative governing body is maintained. This was what the Student Council attempted to do during the Fall semester. Some of the more important pro- jects carried out or embarked upon during the Fall semester were the establishment of the Student Service Class, the planned publishing of a student government handbook, the planning of the first Winter Formal, the establishment of a Student Dress Code, and serious progress toward a school seal or coat of arms. I feel that members of the Student Council, Representative Assembly and Student Court have all done fine jobs the first semester and have made the job of president rel- atively enjoyable to me. Gary Lewis Treasurer Chief Justice Becky George Tom Schwerdt Secretary Sandy Short 64 Head Varsity Football Yell Leader Liz Green Head Football Song Leader Jean Santos Head JV Football Yell Leader Debbie Ross Leaders Tackle School Problems Vice President Bill Beebe The Fall semester Representative Assembly had the re- sponsibility of passing the 1967-68 student body budget. Over $6000. 00, a new high, was appropriated for the improvement of the school. This money will buy stage band uniforms, trees to improve the school grounds, and many needed repairs and improvements for our Hornet's Nest and Vespa. The Repre- sentative Assembly also revised many statute laws and passed laws which provided for the betterment of our student body. Work began on a Student Bill of Rights which wras hoped would soon materialize. 65 Fall-Spring Student Council MEMBERS OF STUDENT COUNCIL were, SEATED: Becky George, fall treasurer, spring treasurer; David Grokenberger, secretary of student affairs; Lee Broshears, spring vice-president; Gary Lewis, fall president, spring president; Perry Fisher, head varsity basketball yell leader; Liz Green, head varsity football yell leader; Sandy Short, fall secretary, spring secretary; Bill Beebe, fall vice-president, secretary of cal- endars. Students Brought to Justice by SS At the start of the 1967-68 school year, the Student Service Class was initiated. The purpose of establishing such a class was to afford the students of Enterprise High School the opportunity of helping control some of their own problems. The students who participate as Service Class members are selected through a screening process by a committee composed of students, faculty, and administration. The main duties of the Service Class are carried on during the lunch periods by those students who supervise the halls, cafe- teria, and grounds, and enforcing the school’s established rules and regulations. Each Service Class member is charged with the responsibility of maintaining a healthy educational atmosphere by encouraging the students of Enterprise High School to have pride in their school and to follow and abide by the rules and regulations which have been adopted by the faculty, the administration, and most importantly, by the students themselves. 67 President Gary Lewis Vice-President Lee Broshears Lewis Leads Spring Officers The student council has done a fine job this year, as have the Representative Assembly and the Student Court. A num- ber of projects have been completed this semester. The first annual Winter Formal was a great success, the official school seal has been drawn up, the Student Government handbook has been completed, and the controversial bill, permitting beards, was finally passed. The Student Court has showed judicial power this year for the first time. In all, this year has been relatively successful, and a lot of progress has been made. Yours truly. Pat LaPointe Editors Experiment with 1968 Vespa TRI-EDITORS: Tom Schwerdt, Don MacGregor, and Scott Munns. Mrs. Ann More Vespa Advisor The editors of this year's Vespa have achieved three primary innovations in the production of the yearbook. The first and perhaps the most notable is the metal inlay insignia on the cover. This specialized cover design was created exclu- sively for the 1968 Vespa, and the covers of other years have been of other types and styles. With limited staff, we made good use of another innovation in procedure, company paste-up, which saved many hours and prevented a few frazzled nerves. Another noteworthy addition is the enlargement of the book itself to collegiate size, a generous 9 x 12 inches. This ennabled the staff to include larger and more numerous pages. 78 Forest Bowman Photographer Merry Koopman Advertising Manager Forest Bowman and assistant photographer, Craig Joksch, check equipment. Jayvees Are Fourth in League at 6-6 The Enterprise Junior Varisty opened the 1967-68 basket- ball season by losing all seven of their pre-league games. Entering league play with a 0-7 record was not promising for the Lil Hornets, but they scored a surprisingly easy opening victory over Chico. The victory over the Panthers seemed to have a settling effect on the team, and they started playing the way many observers had expected them to play when the season started. With three outstanding jayvee teams such as Shasta, Red Bluff, and Yreka in the NAL this year. Enterprise finished fourth with a 6-6 league record. In final summary, an overall 6-13 record does not really do justice to these sophomores who will be back next year to help the Hornet Varsity defend its Northern Athletic League championship. It also gives a person the opportunity to work together with other players on defense and thus learn to participate in combined efforts. Baseball thus has the two-fold purpose of teaching individuality and teaching people to work together in order to achieve a common end. A person needs both ingredients in order to succeed in today's competitive society. The main purpose of any game, however, is to win, and that is what the 1968 Enterprise varsity baseball team should be able to do this year if it keeps the proper attitude. If this is achieved, it will only be because the players worked together as a team and utilized their natural gifts to the best of their ability. This year's JV baseball team had the tough task of defend- ing two straight junior varsity titles. According to Coach Manatowa, this year's squad had as much talent as either of the two previous championship teams, and had an equal chance of winning the title for the third time in a row. Coach Manatowa was forced to go with all sophomores this year, as Nova High monopolized the frosh help. Man- atowa liked to keep as many freshmen as possible for the next year. 9iasta appeared to be the team to beat at the JV level. They were strong in pitching, hitting, and defense, but Manatowa stated, For the past two years Enterprise had not been favored—and look what happened!” Returning starters from last year's squad were Mike Natina and Doug Petersen. These boys added greatly needed experience in the drive for the championship. Record-Holders Add Experience 'Hie 1967-68 Enterprise track team was in the early stages of practice when this summary was written. They had won one dual meet with C.V. and were preparing for a meet with Shasta. The team, although having many strong performers, was very much lacking in needed depth. They had no strong showings in any field event except the broad jump. Coach Russell said that if this team was to win the NAL champion- ship, they would need strong performances from the secon- dary runners and a few points in the field events. Among the returning lettermen from last year were Gary Lewis, perhaps the best hurdler in the North State, and Nick Gardner, holder of the school record in the broad jump. Other lettermen included Bruce Roy, Gary Holtzen, and Mike Rossiter. With a little luck and a few points, it may be a fine season for the track team. School record-holders, Gary Lewis in the hurdles and Nick Gardner in the broad jump, practice their specialties in preparation for an upcoming meet. Long-distance runner Gary Holtzen floats by fellow trackmen Dan Nelson, Jim Belcher, and A1 Denny. Golf Is Added to 1 EHS Sports Program The SUHS District finally allotted the needed money for Enterprise High School to field a golf team this year on a regular basis. In past years, the school has formed a team just to play in the sectional finals and nowhere else. The team came in with a sixth-place finish in last year’s sectional finals. With two outstanding seniors such as Dave Groken- berger and Rio Reimer returning to spearhead the team, Enterprise’s tennis fortunes are again strong.
