Sponsored by the Foreign Student Committee and PTA, Margie traveled with 700 other American students to Europe, and from there to Turkey with a smaller group. She and her Turkish parents, sisters Leyla, six- teen, Belkiz, twelve, and brother Ali, fourteen, spent the summer on the island of Buyukada, near Istanbul. Team manager Mike Park bandages arm injury for Brian Dyer. The Varsity team was given a poor chance to win any games at all at the beginning of the season, but the team surprised the critics with a well-fought win over NAL rival Red Bluff. Its defeats came only as a result of hard hits at weak moments, and there were many spectacular of- fensive plays. In addition, Enterprise was named the most improved team in the League. Coach Bob Russell shouts plays to the fighting sc iad. Victory Over Red Bluff Accents Spartans are stopped by strong Hornet defense. Ed Romig leads the Hornet band in a half-time performance. Coach Hussell gives player a few tips on an offensive play. 74 Homecoming Celebration Bob Rapalll makes a dash to check Spartan runner. Red Bluff's first defeat at the hands of the Hornets since 1961 came at the game of November 4. The game, with a score of 31-27, was the first victory in NAL competition for the season. Until tins game, the Hornets had only won one game out of eight. The game was highlighted by Tom Schwerdt's outstand- ing passes, a 43-yd. touchdown run by Mike Gardner, and a 33-yd. touchdown run by Ron Hague. Mark Williams dodges oncoming Spartan. Mark Williams takes advantage of an opening in Spartan Hornet charges through opponents' barrier, defense. 75 Falcons close In on Hornet. Mike Gardner checks CV runner while other players rush in to back him up. Hornets Rout Falcons By One TD A small margin determined the hard-fought defeat of the Hornets by the Falcons, score 13-7. However, the Falcons were out- gained on the ground by Enterprise with Mark Williams and Mike Gardner doing most of their damage around end. Williams had 99 yards in 17 carries, Gardner 70 in 9. Marching 89 yards in 15 plays, Enterprise scored their only touchdown of the game with Tom Schwerdt pulling a keeper over center from the one yard-line for the touch- down, and Williams converting to make the extra point. 77 but he breaks away successfully for a completed pass and gain in yardage. Chico Panthers Defeat Hornets 33-24 The Enterprise Hornets went down fighting the 21st of October, losing to the Chico Panthers 33-24 after holding the lead twice in the first half. Enterprise took advantage of some big breaks to do its scoring, a fumble recovery, an intercepted pass, and a blocked punt leading to the first three touchdowns. The fourth touchdown came as a result of the Hornets gaining possession of the ball through a spectacular recovery of a fumble followed by a 55 yard drive for the score. Chico Panther comes dangerously near to the goal line. 78 Chico runner leads Hornets in a race for yardage. Hornet player is tripped up by a Panther tackle. Panther topples Hornet runner. 79 Mike Weis downs a Panther onrusher. Wolves Edge Hornets 14-6 The Enterprise Hornets hit the Shasta Wolves with a spectacular 79-yard touchdown on a punt return by Mike Gardner with just 75 seconds played in the football game. But the Wolves took the jolt, shook It off, and bounced back to win the final game of the season at Thompson Field 14-6. Except for fumbles and intercepted passes, the Hornets might have stayed on top. Schwerdt's passing, despite the interceptions, was the main Enterprise offensive weapon, with Ron Hague, Bob Rapalli, Mark Williams, and Gene Bouma all doing responsible receiving jobs. Mike Gardner attempts to evade Shasta defense line. Mike Gardner is trailed by Shasta Wolves in his attempt to gain yardage. Mark Williams is grabbed from behind to stop his advance. an Wolf charger is cut down by Hornets Tom Blumenstein, 44, and Charles Braun, 88. 81 Mike Gardner is hemmed in by attacking Wolves. Anderson Game Ends In Hornet Downfall Mark Williams receives pass and makes ready to avoid Anderson Cubs. The NAL opener for the Hornets was a disappointing defeat by the Anderson Cubs, with a score of 13-0. The Hornets made it to the Anderson 23 once and near the end of the game to the 32. They had the ball 46 running and passing plays. Although offensive figures were not too impressive, the defense was hard hitting with neither team content to let one man make many tackles by himself. Hornet defense corners Anderson runner. 82 Senior Lettermen FIRST ROW: Bill Kohn, Dick Steele, Ed Axtell, Charles Braun, Rick Whetstone. SECOND ROW: Mike Gardner, Tom Blumenstein, Mark Williams. (Steve Kclsay not pictured) Senior letterman Steve Kelsay fights for a rebound. Dave Walsh attempts hook shot over the arm of a Red Bluff guard. Home Games Steve Kelsay acts as block to give I)an Riley an easy jump shot. The Hornets defeated the Red Bluff Spartans with a nerve-shattering 46-45. The Hornets didn’t hit the basket with much consistency, and they were never able to gain anything better than a tie until the final 35 seconds when Ron Hague hit a jump shot from the corner to put the Hornets ahead for the first time 19- 17. They were never behind after that although Red Bluff did manage to tie the score again 19-19 before the half. Steve Kelsay strains to reach the ball as Tom Schwerdt and Scott Munns stand ready to receive the tip-off. 90 In the first NAL game with Central Valley, Enterprise scored 21 points in the final period to beat the Falcons, coming from a five point deficit to do it. The final score read 47-37. In spite of CV's big height ad- vantage, the Hornet hustle on the boards paid off in rebounding, again especially in the last quarter when Enterprise grabbed 11 to one for the Falcons. The Hornets rose to great heights to hand the Yreka Miners their only NAL basketball loss. Using a slow, deliberate, ball-control type of technique, the Hornets edged the powerful Miners 33-30, with the deciding three points coming in the final minute. Yreka was held to less than half its usual point output, and Enterprise came through with enough good shots to out- score them. Dan Riley tries to get off a quick shot before the other players arrive on the scene. Mike Fairhurst cringes as Scott Munns tries to block the shot of opponent. The Hornet team was trying to freeze the ball with just over a half minute left to play in the Anderson- EHS game when Tom Breedlove took a jump shot from the corner, as Hornet fans groaned. But the ball went into the basket and gave Enterprise a six- point lead. It was a good thing the 5-foot-9 junior took the shot because the Anderson Cubs scored five points in the last 30 seconds and Enterprise barely won 47-46 in the season's basketball finale for the two teams. Away Games Mark Williams dribbles through two Red Bluff players on his way toward the basket. The Enterprise Hornets made few mistakes, were tough on de- fense, and sent Central Valley High School into the cellar of the Northern Athletic League. Enterprise took the game with a score of 50-27. The Hornets only lost the ball five times on bad passes, etc., a near perfect performance. TTiey hit 41 per cent of their field goal attempts and only missed one free throw. The Hornets second clash with the Miners was not so triumphant, with a score of 57- 44 in the Miners favor. It was a rough contest, 39 points coming in free throws. The defeat lost the Hornets the chance to gain the NAL championship. Dave Walsh cuts between two opponents for a lay up shot. For three quarters the Hornets gave Red Bluff all it could handle in the first NAL game between the two teams. The contest was a good showing except for three players being fouled out and several critical layups being missed. Enterprise led for the first three quarters, then Red Bluff pulled ahead to win with a score of 64-47. A third-quarter splurge by the Panthers enabled Chico to come from behind and drop the Hornets 52-4.3. In the third period the Panthers jumped ahead with 18 points. Although Enterprise closed to within 5 points of Chico in the fourth quarter, they were never able to completely close the gap. Cold shooting and huge gaps of scoreless time were the big factors in the NAL game at Anderson. The Hornets still numb from their victory over the Yreka Miners, slacked off and lost to Anderson 50-30. In their second encounter, EHS turned Shasta High's fouls into free-throw points for a 55-32 victory. Although Shasta had the better field percentage, 36.1 to 32.5, the Hornets were 76.3 to 31.6 from the line and grabbed 34 rebounds to 25 for the Wolves. And Enterprise kept ball-handling mistakes to a minimum. Using his tongue to help his aim, Steve Kelsay tries for a basket. Ron Hague jumps for two against Red Bluff. 93 Junior Varsity Basketball FIRST ROW, left to right: Dean Moyer, Mike Natina, Brent Bolton, Lee Broshears, Tully Van Slyke, Bill Bailey, Mike Leonard, Paul Arquette.
