1963-1964 D(y you (ttUMtf' . . . . . . the man with the deep, rolling voice whose love of humor can not but force a smile from those around him? Do you know a man who is never too busy to pause in his work and help you with a personal problem? Do you know a man who, when he reads aloud, makes the characters involved emerge as living beings? Do you know a man whose excellence has inspired you to new achievements? If so, you know Mr. Robert Grossen, Mr. Grossen has taught senior English, been the mainstay of the attendance office, and was senior class advisor for several years. To him we proudly and affectionately dedicate the 1964 Vespa. 2 Mr. Colby Photography advisor Mr. Gonzales Advisor Jim Free Photographer 4 Sandy Ellison, co-editor, gets rid of unnecessary material (Mary Ann Bowen, editor). The Vespa staff hopes that as you turn the pages of this book, you will recall much of what you experienced during your days at Enterprise. You studied, had fun, despaired over moments of trial and error. You enjoyed games, car parades, assemblies, and dances. You shared the hopeless reality of exams, deadlines, semester grades, and term papers, each time vowing that this time I am not going to procrastinate. Underclassmen who return to Enterprise in the fall will continue to keep up the high standards of the school and strive for improvement. For the seniors, their graduation from Enterprise will be met with mingled feelings of relief and regret. We hope that our work this year has pro- duced a book which will, through the use of photographs, bring back memories of moments filled with pleasure, frustration, and the spirit of Enterprise High School. 5 ■i ' V ! I Rules are nothing unless they are en- forced. This task is delegated to our ad- ministrators, Mr. Denny and Mr. Fitzgerald. Look down any corridor or around any corner, and it is likely you will see one of them observing classes, escorting a visitor, or listening carefully and answering fairly a student's ques- tion. They set the example of dignity, courtesy, and broad-mindedness which is followed by students and visitors alike and makes Enterprise High School the fine school it is. Many students have worked hard and have gotten excellent grades, earning for our class the reputation of being the best-ever at EHS. When all the grades are averaged out however, one student stands out above all the rest—Bill Esch- enbach, Valedictorian of 1964. Combining many extra-curricular activities with a full college-prep course. Bill is truly deserving of the title. QdhdaivdCLH Many people think of the Salutatorian as be- ing second-best and therefore not worthy of much attention. Mary Ann Bowen, this year's Salutatorian, hardly fits the description of sec- ond-best. She is well-known by most of the students at EHS because she participates in so many activities—football Buzzy, C.S.F., Foreign Student Committee, Editor of Vespa—to name but a few. Few of the people who know her think of Mary Ann as being second-best, for those who know her know she will always be among the top in whatever she does. 41 Mr. Denny presents to Bill Marx a certificate from KAHR radio for ten dollars after Bill spent all his money to go to Washington, D.C. for the funeral of President John F. Kennedy. The Senior Class of 1964 has been noted for its enthusiasm, ability, and leadership ever since entering the doors of Enterprise High School. Freshman classes generally go unnoticed ex- cept for the size they add to a school. As Fresh- men, we upset this tradition by being the first Freshman class to ever win the megaphone. Once begun, this pattern was not disrupted. Most Junior classes tend to go into what is called a “Junior slump; they usually just sit quietly in the assemblies and never present any competi- tion for the megaphone. We won the megaphone from the seniors in the second assembly, and we continued to win it. This year has been filled with deadlines, col- lege applications, term papers, and hootenan- nies. We look forward to the future hopefully; but, at the same time, reminisce over the mis- takes, triumphs, and pleasures of our four years here at Enterprise High School. 42 Jan Webb and Mike Jackson at an assembly. De- bate was heard pro and con in the Repre- sentative Assembly, and several amend- ments were adopted into the Constitution. The Constitution was found to be bulky, containing ambiguous phrases, and a com- mittee was formed to revise it into a work- able and useful instrument. Several members of the Student Council went to the Chico Student Leaders Confer- ence, where they attended meetings dealing with various aspects of student government and student affairs. This administration was strong and its af- fect was felt on the entire school and its ac- tivities. 76 Lindo Cane, secretary EcJUl Qbu Bcxij Sandy Funk, treasurer 77 Marilyn Rodgers, head yell-leader. Pi U $og President Bill Eschenboch During my administration, several major accom- plishments have been made by both the Student Council and the Representative Assembly. Possibly the biggest of these were the setting up of the calendar and the completion of next year's budget. These were both long-term projects calling for hard work on the part of many of the Student Council members. This is the first year in which these projects have been completed, and it marks a great step in the direction of a more efficient stu- dent government. Other projects completed during my term of of- fice included the appropriation of $100 to the Ken- nedy Memorial fund and the appropriation of funds for gold basketballs for our championship basketball team. The Representative Assembly and the Student Council have both done very well this year and have my thanks for the jobs they performed. JERI YOUNG JERRY ZELAZNY 146 ftt On November 22, 1963, the people of the world suf- fered a great loss. It was on that day that John F. Kennedy, President of the United States of America, was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. President Kennedy was a very popular chief executive, especially with the youth of America. The people of the Redding area felt this loss even more deeply because he had just recently visited our area to dedicate the Whiskey- town Dam. His dignity and youthful vitality were quite evi- dent as he went out of his way to greet and to shake hands with the crowds of people who had come to see him. Novem- ber 22, 1963, is a date few people will ever forget; and fewer still will forget John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the thirty- fifth President of the United States.
