DEDICATION Enterprise High School has been through a tur- bulent year. At first there was the confusion of holding classes in Shasta High and in buildings around Redding; then came the troublesome duty of moving from the many locations to the new plant; after the move all the complexities of school or- ganization arose. Without able, understanding leadership, this past year could have been chaotic. As it turned out. Enterprise High came through the trying period, developed an admirable spirit, and established a high reputation for itself among the major schools of Northern California. We would like to dedicate our first yearbook to the person largely responsible for the many achieve- ments of our school—our principal, friend, and fellow Hornet-AAR. CHARLES F. DENNY. YEARBOOK AT ENTERPRISE After a number of years of planning and effort. Enterprise High School is now a living reality. I am very proud of the school and happy to have shared in creating it. This is particularly true because of the high quality this new institution is judged to possess. Through the generosity of your parents and friends, we have made a beautiful plant available to you. You, in turn, have justified this gift by the traditions you have begun to create—traditions which typify a high quality of school citizenship. Part of the responsibility for this praiseworthy pro- gram is shared by your faculty, which, as you know and as do I, is a very good one. Your teachers and principal and you have made a team that has, in fact, won a championship. I hope and believe that as your school expands to include all four grades, you will continue to develop the same quality of student body that now characterizes your school. We shall continue to watch your growth with much interest and satisfaction. There will come a time, of course, when Enterprise High chool will be very old and well-known. The Black and Gold will iave marched down many years, across many goal lines on both .  thletic and academic fields of endeavor. Many persons will iave entered our halls timidly as Freshmen and four years later will have graduated hopefully into a world increasingly complex and infinitely interesting. Of these a curious few, the historians, will be interested to re- examine this antiquated record of our first year, to evaluate the significance of our present deeds and words, and to observe the ofluence that we, the students and faculty, may have exerted pon the enduring character and personality of our school. To them I would report: We have tried to establish freedom and honor together as the basis of our self-government and self-respect. We have recog- nized that without honor, democracy cannot survive, and that without democracy, freedom shall perish. We have affirmed our faith in factual knowledge as the only sound basis for judgment, and in kindiness, integrity and industry rs guides for living and working happily in the years ahead. CHARLES F. DENNY 3 FACULTY AAR. GROSSEN English 4 FACULTY MR. The duties are many and th responsibilities great. The many educatior al achievements of the schools and the cut rent long range building program giv abundant testimony to the manner in whic the trustees are carrying out their duties. 6 ' 'T’ I. CLAIRE RUMBOITZ MR. AIKEN VESPA STAFF We of the yearbook staff are proud to have organized and published the first Vespa. With your support we were able to put out a satisfactory edition even though many obstacles hampered our progress. The many events that took place during this year are shown in the book. We hope you will enjoy this year's Vespa and treasure it as a momento of a wonderful year. FIRST ROW: V. Mann. J. Polf, C. Rombolti. G. Cram. C. Forrester, SECOND ROW Mr Aiken, T. Finkler, C. Because of the fine coaching and hard drilling of Mr. Bob Rus- sell, we wrapped up the season with a total of four wins, two losses, and one tie. All through the season, the students anxiously awaited the last game of the season which was to be played agair t the Shasta J.V. team. There was a fine turnout of students at this game, and we all got a thrill when our team bowled them over 13 to 0. 14 FOOTBALL TEAM FIRST ROW, left to right: B. Bidwell, A. Fogerson, C. Todd. R. In addition, basketball was eagerly played by everyone. A splendid turnout of more than a thousand interest , citizens attended. Many inspiring speeches and tertaining music constituted t h e evening's forms program after which an open house was held. MR. FARRUGGIA AND BAND ROGER COWLING WINTER GIRLS' SPORTS After Enterprise High moved from Shasta High in January, the students were not able to use the gym facilities for a month. When the gym was made avail- able, the girls plunged into winter sports activities with great zeal. Each class was divided into four basketball teams, and competition was under way. Later in the Spring, the girls had their first experience with tumbling in which they showed real talent. All girls participated in building pyramids or tumbling head over heels down the tumbling mats. BAND ORCHESTRA 26 MIXED GLEE FUTURE HOMEMAKERS I UU FT Students interested in following agriculture as a vocation have, in the Future Farmers of America, an active organization for fulfilling their aims. Their year is filled with field trips, social affairs, stock exhibits, and inter- school sports competition. The climax of their year's social activities was the first annual Ag Ball over which reigned Shirley Enloe, the newly crowned Ag Queen. 28 C S. F. BOXING The Block E's first annual boxing scamper, which was held on the evening of March 16th, was one of Enterprise's foremost successes of the year. There was a fine crowd, which helped the morale of the nervous boxers. All the participants in the scamper fought hard and put on a thrilling exhibition for the spectators, which we hope will draw them back to all the scampers in the future. WINNERS 1. Ray Call—95 2. One of the'exhibition fights was given by two prom- ising boxers from Enterprise elementary school. Al- though there were several bloody noses, the boxers were evenly matched, preventing any T.K.O.'s or knockouts. Proceeds from the boxing scamper went a long way toward defraying the cost of athletic insurance. LOSERS 1. Bob McCaslin—96 2. Larry Hyatt—145 3. Dennis Powers—194 4. Duane Jerome—156 5. One was at Chico against Chico Jr. High and Paradise in the A and B divisions, and in the other we took first place in the C division in a six way meet at Orland High School. Nine men of our track team placed in the semi-finals in Redding with seventeen schools attending. They quali- fied for the North State Sectional Finals held at Chico. Enterprise did particularly well in the distance events, the broad jump, the shot put, and the hurdles. 41 SPRING GIRLS' SPORTS In the early spring, the new gym was available and the girls participated in folk dancing and volleyball. Later the weather enabled the girls to play baseball outdoors. Each class was divided into three baseball teams, and the teams within the classes challenged each other. Mary Kay, Barbara Townsend, Judy Baily, Pat Lott, Janet Polf, Carol Nach- reiner, Linda Hale, Beverly McKenzie, and Arlene Waters attended a sports clinic at Chico High School where they learned the proper techniques of playing baseball. 42 Individual Pictures On the following pages are pictured the charter members of the Enterprise High School Student Body. Many of the fresh- men will leave to attend Central Valley High School for their sophomore year. The faculty and remaining students eagerly an- ticipate welcoming them when they return as juniors. K. They also formed two baseball teams which competed against each other. 31 HORNET'S NEST MRS. FOSTER The Hornet's Nest, the school paper, has had a unique year.
