On Monday of HC Week the facul- ty members were dressed in the style of the 1950s. Tuesday was Clash Day with everyone dressing in extremely bad taste Wednes- day saw the crowning of Karren Terry as Homecoming Queen Thursday was the student's turn to wear clothes of the 50s A Thursday night pep rally bon-fire was held with students still in cos- tume. Thelma Schall. and David Batchelor catch the spirit of Clash Day HOMECOMING 1978. HOMECOMING ’78 FEATURES CLASH DAY. The climax of Homecoming Week was Friday. Students showed their EHS spirit by wearing blue and white Our school colors were everywhere During the Friday pep rally each class presented an exciting and funny skit. The HC game was a winner also. The cats defeated Northview 20-6. After the game, a Homecoming Dance was held EHS danced far into the night to the sound of Legal Tender LEFT: Steve Fearing and Karl Kigerl bring the crowd to their feet during half time show BELOW: Teachers are also into the spirit of Homecoming KARREN TERRY IS CROWNED HOMECOMING QUEEN Karren Terry was elected by the student body as the 1978 Enter- prise High School Homecoming Queen. Karren was a regal and beautiful queen. Her Court con- sisted of; Runner-up Laura Da- vis. Runner-up Karen Graham, Runner-up Tammy Walker. Sr. Attendant Alesia Florence, Sr. Attendant Kim Kollhoff, Jr. At- tendant Pam Henderson, and Soph. Attendant Amber Hughes. The Queen and her Court repre- sented EHS with style and grace. LEFT (L-R): Sr Kim Kollhoff. Jr. Pam Henderson, Soph. Amber Hughes. 25 WILDCATS WIN EIGHT; LOSE TWO. The EHS Wildcat Football Team ended the year with eight wins and only two losses. The Wildcats won their first game by beating Vigor of Mobile The lead changed hands several times but the Cats emerged with a victory 20-17. The Wildcat's second game ended with a win over Ozark 33-8. Stuart Key. Tommy Moore. The Wildcats traveled to Troy and battled the Henderson High Trojans. The Cats defeated the Trojans by a score of 34-0. Jeff Evans scored a TD by running in a blocked Trojan punt. The Wildcats next upended the Selma Saints 31-7. Among those putting points on the board were Stuart Key. Ray McEachern, Tommy Moore, and Billy Barnes. The Vikings of Ft. Walton were defeated by the Wildcats 37-20. Stuart Key ran for 140 yards and 3 touchdowns. Ray McEachern kicked a 40 yard field goal. The Lanier Poets handed the Cats their first of two defeats. Enterprise could only manage to put 7 points on the board, while Montgomery put 17 points up. The Wildcats record went to 6-1 after the thrilling 41-8 defeat of the Carver Wolverines. Tommy Moore and Stuart Key each scored 2 TDs. BELOW: The Cats offensive line is impressive each game 33 NORTHVIEW DOTHAN FALL, PRATTVILLE SLIPS AWAY The Wildcats hosted their new rival- Northview of Dothan. The Cats came away with a 20-6 win. The Wildcats then traveled to Prattville where two unusual plays gave Prattville a 13-12 win. After that bitter loss, the Cats destroyed Dothan High 48- 0. The Wildcat Varsity Football Team ended the season with an impressive 8-2 record. The 1978-79 Varsity Wildcat Basketball Team ended the season with one of its best records. Under the direction of Coach Sam Weeks, the Cats had a record of 29 wins and 4 losses. In addition they were champs of the New Brockton Tip Off Tournament, the Enterprise Christmas Tournament, runners up in the Eufaula Tournament of Champions, and the Region Three Tournament. In the Region Three Tournament, the Wildcats reached the finals. After defeating Pratville 95-66. the Wildcats advanced to the semi- finals. There they defeated Carver 64-53. The final game was held on March 3, 1979. The Cats were defeated by Selma. The Cats closed out their most successful seasons in many years. The EHS Volleyball Team ended its season with a record of 11 wins and only 2 losses. They defeated such teams as Andulsia. Dothan, Ozark, Lanier, and Eufaula. The Cats hosted the regional tournament where they placed third. Under the direction of Coach Wanda Weeks the volleyball team had a successful season. The Enterprise High School Lady Wildcats Basketball Team had a rewarding season. They won elev- en games while only losing four. The Lady Cats were the runner-up in the Regional Basketball Tour- nament. The players were C. Johnson, T. Watts, M. Brooks, M. Stringer, J. Johnson, A. Green- wood, L. Council, and J. Green. EHS played Northview, Ozark, Opp, Andalusia, Elba, Daleville, and Troy. Team members were: Jerry Bavaro, Stan Stinson, Joel Hughes, Kevin Maddox, and Ricky Bavaro. Bavaro. J. Hughes. K. Maddox. EHS BASEBALL HAS OUTSTANDING YEAR. The EHS Baseball Team had one of its best seasons ever. With a record of seven wins and two losses they missed the region play off by one game. The highlight of the season was a 5- 2 win over the former State Champs, the Dothan Tigers. Most Valuable Player was Mark Lolley. Batting Champion was Bruce Averett. Team Captains were David Strickland and Dewey Lolley. RIGHT: Ray McEachern waits for his turn at the plate. The Most Valuable Runner was Willie Ball. Willie Jones broke the School long jump record. The Girls Tennis Team won four matches out of nine. They beat such teams as Dothan and Troy The Boys Tennis Team won six of nine. They defeated Northview, Dothan, Ozark, and Troy. LEFT: Terry Rudd handles a hard hit service. EHS TAKE SECOND AT P.E. DAY. Over 100 Enterprise High School students participated in the annual PE Day at Enterprise State Junior College. EHS did well-placing second in the entire competition. EHS took first in the girl's swimming events and in all but two in the boy’s swimming. EHS also took firsts in badminton and table tennis. CHADWICK IS NEW ART TEACHER. The EHS Art Dept, was not confined to the art room. The influence of the art dept, was felt by the entire student body. Art provided students the opportunity to develop creative skills and value within their own abilities and to achieve success with available tools and materials. Mr. James Chadwick was the new art teacher and displayed not only talent for art but also a talent for working with students. RIGHT: Mr Chadwick is the new EHS art teacher. BELOW: Second year students work on fantasy drawings 66 67 MR. BILL HICKMAN IS NEW BAND DIRECTOR. Mr. Bill Hickman was named the new EHS band director. Under his leadership, the band program excelled. The marching band performed at all EHS football games. They attended two band festivals and received Superior ratings at both. The Wildcat marching Band represented Enterprise at Gov. Fob James' inauguration. RIGHT: Mr Hickman is new band director. RIGHT: Jackie Beadles contemplates the long parade route CATS MARCH IN INAUGURATION PARADE. After marching season, the band divided into the stage band, concert band and symphonic band. The Stage Band received a Superior Rating at the State Solo and Ensemble Contest. The Concert Band received an excellent rating and the Symphonic Band received a superior rating at the district concert festival. TOP: The brass line prepares for performance. ABOVE: The conga line is a hit at shows. LEFT: Steve Fearing and BAND SPRING CONCERT IS MAY 11, 1979. The EHS Band held their annual spring concert May 11th in the auditorium. The concert was very entertaining. All the band divisions performed. The Concert Band, Stage Band, and Symphonic Band were all well received. The EHS Concert Choir and Girls Chorus held two annual concerts, one in the fall and a spring concert. The groups competed at the district and state levels in All State Festival. An end of the year banquet was held at the end of school to honor outstanding members, Keith Ammons and Jenifer Jeter. Miss McHearg was the new choral music teacher. RIGHT: Sally Gibson. The Cup O'Coffee staff published 10 issues of the school paper. The paper format was new, with mast-heads chosen from student's suggestions. Curtis Ross was the Editor-in-Chief. He was assisted by Amy Smith- news editor, Gigi Southwell-features editor, Gary Reese- sports editor, Craig Rogers- photographer, and Sharon Justice- ad manager. Staff members were D. Batchelor, R. The team won over 25 awards including awards at Auburn, University of Georgia, Huntsville, Selma, and Mars Hill. At the State Debate Tournament EHSers placed second in Dramatic Interp., second in original oratory, and in the Girls Extemp. The EHS Debate Team had two members to qualify for the Nationals. The EHS English Department stressed competence in skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. It also provided experiences and activities that helped students become discriminating users of print and non-print media. English courses were required of all students to help develop their powers of comprehension, critical thinking skills and their communication of ideas. The Spanish classes studied Mexico and South American countries in depth with emphasis on travel needs and planning a trip. One favorite excercise was to listen to the language and practice orally. The primary objective of the EHS Social Studies program was to prepare thoughtful, active citizens who can function effectively in our swiftly changing and shrinking world. The program provided many learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. Field trips, movies, and community speakers added to the programs effectiveness. Courses offered were Math Computations. Consumer Math. Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trig, Mechanical Drawing, and 5th year math. The program was designed to help students who will continue in higher education and those who whose formal education will cease after EHS. Physical Education was very busy in 1978-79. Flag football, rhythmic aerobics started the year off. Soccer was introduced this year. Basketball, volleyball, table tennis, checkers, and chess were all used in development of skills. Agility, co- ordination, and balance were tested with the trampoline, mats, and balance beam. The end of the year saw softball, track, badminton and bowling. Careful planning and co-ed classes resulted in another effective year in P.E. The new Senior Army Instructor for the EHS JROTC Program was Col. James T McQueen. The enrollment was one of the largest ever in the JROTC program. The Cadet Corps was commanded by Cadet Colonel Anthony Biasello. Battalion Commanders were Cadet LTC Steve Nagy and Cadet LTC Brandt Cosgrove. JROTC instructors were MSGT. Duhaime, MSGT. Spiliotis, SFC Edgar, and CWO Reynolds. TOP: The Review Ceremony is always impressive. D Company commanded by Cadet Major Lee Williams was selected as the Honor Company of the year. This selection was based on the overall record of the company for the school year. On April 3, 1979 the Annual Federal Inspection was conducted. As a result of this inspection which was made by Third Region Headquarters from Ft. Riley. Kansas, the EHS JROTC Program received a score of 98.46 out of a possible 100. The Enterprise High School JROTC Program had another outstanding year. The JROTC Band under the direction of LTC Richard Hobson had three public performances this year-the Christmas parade, the Annual Inspection, and the Annual Awards Review. The Color Guard commanded by Cadet Roger Porter presented the colors for each home football game and raised and lowered the flag each day at EHS. The Rifle Team commanded by LTC David Howell established two new school records this year. The Rifle Team won First Place in Shreveport, La. against 33 teams. They placed second in the Region II postal match and second in the Wiregrass Conference. They collected 10 team and 15 individual trophies this year. The Belles of the Blue Knights commanded by LTC Laura Davis and the Blue Knights under the command of LTC Stacey Sparkman traveled over 3,000 miles to participate in competitions and demonstrations. At the Shreveport, La. Meet, the teams brought back five trophies. Schools in Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana became aware of the EHS JROTC program. Rucker at Lake Thaloco January 25, 1978. Music was provided by the band ‘‘Exodus . A buffet dinner was also served. The cadets and their guests thoroughly enjoyed this outstanding social event. The EHS Science Dept, placed emphasis on the processes of science so that students can discover and interpret scientific knowledge, develop interest in the sciences and use such knowledge in decision making. EHS offers General Science, Biology, Physiology, Chemistry, and Physics. Approximately 42% of the EHS student body were enrolled in life sciences. Theatre Arts, Public Speaking, and Communication and Media students were involved with their courses. Theatre Arts students performed scenes from plays. The Public Speaking classes gave oral reports. Although office skills were taught, more emphasis was placed on the typing of research papers and other compositions. The Career Guidance class took a field trip to the ESJC Career Development Center where they researched different careers. Students in the VIE classes brought equipment from their training stations and presented demonstrations to classes. The Home Economics Dept, offered Home Ec. I and II, Child Care. Auto Mechanics I covered tools, brake service, steering, alignment, tune-up, and carburation. Auto Mechanics II covered engine, chassis, transmission, and differential. The welding classes had a change of curriculum which limited live work but improved the quality of work. The electricity classes worked in the shop and an outside house. Business Office Education included instructional programs for all their students according to interest and needs. Courses offered were Office Training I and II, Typewriting, Shorthand, and Bookeeping. Distributive Education prepared students who are entering businesses requiring competency in sales, promotions, buying, storage, research, and management. Health Occupations provided learning experiences for students to develop knowledge about health concepts and career fields. Recent tests and 10 year evaluation results indicated the faculty and students were doing their job. One reason was the administration. The production was a smash hit. It took three months of long hard rehearsals in order to achieve that success. Mr. Thompson and Mr. Bryan were again the directors. Mr. Hickman was the Musical Director. Many people were involved in the productions. Classes under Mr. Martin. Mr. Routley. and Mr. Arnette also worked hard on “South Pacific. Graduation was held on May 31, 1979 in Bates Memorial Stadium. There was rain until 7:05 p. m. that night. The decision to go ahead with the ceremony was a good one. No rain fell on the Class of 1979. The ceremony lasted one hour. At 8:31 p. m. the Class of 1979 had become the Graduates of 1979. TOP RIGHT: The decision is made not to postpone the ceremony. The Club's Outstanding Free Enterprise puppet show was given to elementary schools in the city and the project won second place in the state. Students also participated in an anti-shoplifting project, fashion shows, and Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. They were also a finalist in the DECA State Chapter of the Year. H. Dack A. Davis. 224 ANCHOR CLUB CONDUCTS ROAD BLOCK. The Anchor Club was busy during the entire school year. Working with a Hillcrest Special Education class was a year long activity. They also worked with the Red Cross Blood Drive, held a Clean up day at EHS, aided the Coffee County Arts Alliance, assisted the Junior Service League and the Public Library. They conducted a roadblock for the Alabama Lung Association. Several social functions were held during the year. The program involved teams from schools throughout central and south Alabama. The EHS Competing Team consisted of Jenny Harris, Thom Jones, Lee Williams, and Gary Wittekind. EHS won the competition with an undefeated season with wins over New Brockton, Andalusia, Montgomery Academy, and Carver. Mr. Alford was the Prep Bowl Coach. ALFORD MOVES UP. Mr. Tim Alford will no longer be at Enterprise High School next year. He will become Assistant Superintendent of Enterprise City Schools. In only five years Mr. Alford has become a valued part of EHS. His knowledge, leadership, and concern has endeared him to the students, the faculty, and the community. We wish him well and want him to know he will be missed. MR. CARTER WILL BE NEW PRINCIPAL. Enterprise High School will have a new principal next year. He is Mr. David Carter. As assistant principal Mr. Carter was a proven leader and friend to EHS. His devotion to Enterprise High School went above and beyond the call of duty. As principal he will use the same abilities that made him a great assistant principal. EHS will be in good hands in the coming years. 239 EHS SAYS THANK YOU, MR. MORGAN. Love is a word that is used too frequently in these days and times. However, in this particular case its use is justified. Mr. Thad Morgan loves Enterprise High School. Not only does he love all the people involved with EHS, he loves the sight, the sound, and the smell of it. As coach, assistant principal, and principal his primary concern has always been the welfare of the students and their education. As he leaves Enterprise High School to become Superintendent of Enterprise City Schools we want him to know one thing - Enterprise High School loves him and will not forget him.
