Curtain Going Up...On The 1955 Musical Extravaganza , % q If PRODUCERS: ENTERPRISE HIGH SCHOOL ENTERPRISE, ALABAMA JOYCE JONES ..........................Editor LAURA BENTON ...............Associate Editor LINDA MARTIN................Business Manager VOLUME XVIII FOREWORD Music is all around us—a softly hummed tune as we journey from class to class, the stirring rhythm of a march at a football game, the nostalgic strains of a nocturne drifting from the music room, the soothing melody of a popular song at the Junior-Senior party, and the solemn chords of a march on graduation night. Because it is so closely en- twined in our school life, the staff has chosen music as the theme of the 1954-55 ENCOALA. This is the natural and logical process; without the new replacing the old there would be no growth and development. It is interesting, however, to observe how the process sometimes works. The new car, the new furniture, and the new lamp all push the old ones into the back- ground. Sooner or later many re-appear more valuable than they were originally. A parallel is seen in people and ideas. Youth comes along with new methods and ideas which he thinks are superior to those of his predecessor. The parallel goes further because those shelved ideas and methods often re-appear more valuable than once considered. Basically these are the old ideas revital- ized with a contemporary vitamin. As a result the new will be tempered with the old. It is interesting to note for a long time leaders in varied activities have been practicing these pro- cedures which produce a better and stronger product. That which is genuinely and basically good will remain that way regardless of time. May we carry forward all of that which is good in the old and add if to that which is good in the new. Thus tempered, is is our belief that the new will function to the best advantage for the greatest number. J. R. Snellgrove Superintendent CLASS OFFICERS Harbor Lights SENIOR II OFFICERS EARL NOEL . . The high school glee club was begun in 1937 when it consisted of a small girls' chorus. Today there is a mixed glee club of 75 members and a girls' ensemble. The first Enterprise High School Band was organized in 1935. By 1949 there were only 23 band members. Today the band consists of 57 members, including eight majorettes. The band and glee club each presents two concerts each year one of which is usually combined. From the time a student enters the first grade and begins to participate in public school music and the rhythm band until he reaches high school and becomes a member of the band and glee club, he is surrounded by music. Even after school days the community continues to provide musical opportunities for those who are interested. Outstanding among these are the Enterprise Music Club and Community Concerts. Community Concerts are a vital part of musical Enterprise. It is for this reason that we have chosen one of the outstanding artists of the 1954-55 concert series, Mr. Edwin Steffe, as the judge for our beauty section. ’• • 7 .T ' Potsy Goodson, Becky Warren, Linda Ellis, Mary Helen Martin, Karen Mullins, Phyllis Thomason, Dennie Ann Swann, Annis Moore, Head Majorette; Benny Hickman, Drum Major CHEERLEADERS Go, Wildcats, Go Ann Lammons, Jan Franklin, Billie Jo Hardwick, Sara Nell Caraway, Pat Howe and Peggy Henderson Ethel Harrison, Senior III Representative; Kathryn Gillen- water. In the year 1954-55, the NHS participated in many activities. It has sponsored presentation of honorary ribbons to students main- taining a high scholastic average. The NHS pre- sented an assembly playlet during Education Week, and presented a $100 Scholarship to a deserving senior. The local chapter was founded in 1927. President JOHN M. Deloris, a member of the Senior Class, was one of the one hundred ninety thousand high school senior girls who took part in Betty Cocker's national search for the Homemaker of Tomor- row. Contestants were judged by their scores on an objective examination, an essay which they were allotted ten minutes to write on In What Ways Is Homemaking More Important Than Housekeeping? , an individual private interview with a representative of Science Research Associates during the Betty Crocker Tour and five days of close observation in a variety of situations by Science Research Associ- ates. After winning the local and state titles Deloris went on to win the national title of Betty Crocker All-American Homemaker of Tomorrow. In addition to the title Deloris was awarded a $5,000 scholar- ship to the college of her choice, a specially designed pin valued at $1,500 and a tour of the United States and parts of Canada. Miss Louise LeCompte, home economics teacher, who has so ably served as Deloris' sponsor throughout these activities, will accompany her on the tour. She is pretty. She is greeted by the city. Homemaking is more than housekeeping in so many ways. It is the creation of a social situation in which a normal family life may develop, a profession. It cannot be static,- it calls for study, adapt- ability, open-mindedness, and courage. Homemaking includes the selection and use of commodities, the use of income, the care and training of children, household management, stabilization of the fam- ily group by the provision for religious worship, home recreation, budgeting of time, and cultural en- lightenment. Each member of the family has a sense of being loved and wanted, of belonging, a feeling of security and standing in the neighborhood. And all this from someone who has faith in their ideals and aspirations, to encourage and reinforce their efforts toward the attainment of a whole- some personality growth. Housekeeping is just that—the efficient keeping of the house. Deloris with Joy Youmani of Atlanta, Georgia, on the steps of the capitol Deloris with Mr. C. H.
