There Are Paths That Lead... To Knowledge me 1954 eiicmi Published by THE ENCOALA STAFF Enterprise High School Enterprise, Alabama Volume XVII • • • Here Are Paths FOREWORD In the history of Enterprise High School the year 1953-54 will be long remembered. For it was at the beginning of this term that the name Coffee County High School ceased to exist and the name of Enterprise High School came into being. This has come about through the transfer of the school properties and management from the county system to the city system, thereby necessitating a change of name. It is to commemorate this event that the staff of the 1954 Encoala has chosen the theme--pathways of Enterprise--in the hopes th it these memories of schooldays in Enterprise will forever remain as vivid and colorful in the years to come as they are today. That Lead To Heart and Home THE ROAD NOT TAKEN Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And, sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth: Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though, as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence; Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-- I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. Frost Breathes there the man with soul so dead Who never to himself hath said, 'This is my own, my native land.. Scott To her who has nurtured us all our years, who has pro- tected, encouraged and inspired us to strive onward toward the heights of our ambitions, who has loved us and mothered us and has sought always to give to us the best that life can offer, we dedi- cate this 1954 edition of the Encoala to the City of Enterprise. DEDICATION To you, the graduating class of 1954, I give my best wishes for what the future may hold. High school grad- uation should be one of the most important landmarks in your life. May these days bring happy mem- ories to you for many years to come, and may this milestone serve as a constant reminder of the possibilities in your challenging future. MR. R. L. BATES Master of Science University of Alabama ■’iV-.il Bachelor of Science Birmingham Southern Principal of Enterprise High School since 1933 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE CITY BOARD OF EDUCATION The members of the Enterprise Board of Education are Dr. J. S. DuBois, Mr. ]. R. Snellgrove, Mr. L. H. Sessions, Mr. D. H. Rollins, Mr. J. H. Bromberg, and Mr. H. M. Bryson. The first Coffee County High School was a brick building constructed in 1908 on the present site of Enter- prise High School. This building burned in 1912, and that school term was finished out in the churches of the city which were located near the site of the present city cemetery. The present school building was completed for the next school year. The City Board was established in 1906 and had only the elementary schools under its jurisdiction until 1953. On July 1, 1953, the high school officially came under the jurisdiction of the City Board, and the name was changed to Enterprise High School. The high school has grown from a faculty of three or four teachers and a principal to a faculty of 25 classroom teachers and a principal. CITY COUNCIL The members of the City Council are Mr. Quentin Miller; Mr. Douglas Feagin; Mr. Ed Nichols, City Clerk; Mr. Fred Taylor. Mayor; Mr. Aubrey Mixson; Mr. Wyatt Andrews, and Mr. Glenn Heath. Mr. J. H. Carmichael was the first man to settle permanently in Enterprise. Soon after Mr. Car- michael moved to this place, several other families heard of his settlement and moved here also. The town continued to grow and was incorporated in 1897 with a population of 250. Very soon a railroad was laid through Enterprise, a cotton mill constructed, a telephone system installed, and a weekly paper pub- lished. The erection of the Boll Weevil Monument was another great landmark in the history of the city Enterprise now has a population of about 10,500, a great many businesses, and several factories All the citizens of this city are proud of her history and her record of progress through the years. Although the scores show a failure in football, the teams had a wonderful season in the fact that they learned true sportsmanship. The five returning lettermen were joined by 34 of their classmates to make a team that fought hard, played tenaciously, and displayed an enthusiastic love for their school. In spite of the fact that the teams won no games, the enthusiasm of the students was shown by the organi- zation and support of a pep club, which held pre-game rallies and carried students to out of town games. Among the social activities inspired by the football games were a dance after each home game and a banquet sponsored by the Booster Club in December. The A team lettermen are shown as they appeared at the Football Banquet after receiving their letters. The ”B team lettermen are awarded letters for the first time, since it was the first B team.
