gZ'Aji, I ii -fci -Kc-V.'v; ff fv(. :WA. - M V jW l • ... v’. We, THE ENCOALA staff of 1951, hope that this annual will help to bring back memories of your high school days. Though time will pass, and we shall part, this book will be an unbreakable link in your chain of memories. And if, when looking through these pages, you relive the happy days of yesteryears for just a while, our efforts will not have been in vain. Thus, we present this book to you; may your hearts be lighter and your lives be happier for the memories it may bring. aCa ir M r . EDWARD JUSTICE (1936-1950) By the counting of years, Edward lived four- teen short ones, but by the counting of the grains of sand in the time table of joy, fun and love he lived many, many years. We shall miss his bright mischievous eyes, his happy smile and his quick, agile body, for it doesn't seem one so full of life should ever be devoid of it. We intend no sacrilege when we say that though it seems gloomy here because of his going, on that far shore the sun shines more brightly because Edward has brought his joy with him. 1 f. W; v..t , .e-; t--_ We of the South feel we have a rich heritage in the traditions of the past. These heritages have come down through the ages and are never dying. One of these is love for and loyalty to school. To these traditions of the South and a never dying spirit of school loyalty we dedicate this annual. MR. R.L. BATES Principal MRS. School life at C.C.H.S. has so much to offer besides just studying, though. There is never a dull moment. Remember the election of cheerleaders? What fine ones they were! There were some spirited pep meetings in the fall, too. We also elected three C.C.H.S. girls to represent us in the beauty contest at the annual Peanut Festival. Then occurred an event which was a boner for the boys, but a blessing for the girls—Camp Rucker was re-opened. This meant something a little more serious to each of us, however, for it brought the Korean situation to our own back doors. On the light side again, though, the girls in school were kidded about the soldiers all year. It remained a standing joke. Remember that very important day when the Seniors got their class rings? Some people's arm must have gotten sore from holding out their hands for everyone to see the precious pieces of metal. r emk On September 4, all roads led to Coffee County High School. We gathered in over 600 strong, from beaches, camps, trips, and home, to begin the 1950-51 school session. On registration day we joined the throng of students to arrange schedules, pay fees, rent lockers, and buy books. We became acquainted with the new-comers, greeted old friends, and started the old apple-polishing with those teachers who would instruct us. We tolerated Junior Ill's!!! All year long many pictures were taken for the ENCOALA. How much fun it was to get out of class to have your pictures made. (It was fun to get out of class for anything, wasn't it?) The returning of picture proofs was an exciting time. Remember how everyone rushed to swap pictures with friends? One of the opportunities of the year was to attend the recreation course given last fail. The games and stunts learned at the course were used again and again during the year. One Monday morning in Sr. Ill homeroom it was learned that wedding bells had been over-worked the previous weekend. So many of the girls married in 1950-51. Others are sporting engagement rings as we go to press. Remember the time the Sr. II history class enjoyed a birthday cake baked by two students? The cake was a U.N. birthday cake in celebration of the fifth anniversary of the United Nations. Many distinguished people visited C.C.H.S. in 1950-51. Doctor W. H. Jones of Emory University gave a demonstration lab in chemistry class. Mr. and Mrs. Ackerman, South American lecturers and travel- ers, and the Alabama College Glee Club, both presented by the National Honor Society, made out- standing contributions to C.C.H.S. culture. Other visitors included Mrs. Ann Austill, speakers from the Recruiting Office at Montgomery, and representatives from many colleges. How hard the staffs worked on the two school publications, ENCOALA, and Cup O' Coffee. The advanced typing class and its teacher spent some hectic moments publishing the Cup O' Coffee, but it was worth it, because the paper was better this year than ever before. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy — and there were plenty of parties to offset the work. The faculty had several lovely parties. FFA, FHA, Lo-Z Club, and the Sr. I Class had parties; the Boosters made their annual beach trip, and several organizations had picnics. The school clubs conducted a series of radio pro- grams over-the local radio station. These gave the public a glimpse into school life. Oh day of woes! The Enterprise National Guard was called to active duty in January. Five C.C.H.S. students were in the Guard. How sad it was to watch the convoy leave! Not only did we lose students to the National Guard, but also we lost many who left school to join the armed services. The banquets are among the nicest activities of the year. The Booster Club's Football Banquet, the FFA-FHA Banquet, and the Jr.-Sr. Banquet will remain long in the memories of those who attended them. On most Fridays, first and second periods were shortened in order to have assembly. The chapel programs were sometimes plays; sometimes, speakers. Chapel was always fun. Remember how students sat on the very edge of their chairs waiting for the band to play the first note for dismissal? School plays, both Junior and Senior, drew record crowds this year. The audiences were well satisfied with the fine performances. C.C.H.S. was just bursting with pride for its Glee Club, Ensemble, and Band after the beautiful con- certs presented. The Band was only formed this year, and by its fine beginning shows promise of a great future. Class Night, Baccalaureate, and Commencement Exercises climaxed the year's activities. With mingled feelings of regret and pride, and with best wishes for the future, the Seniors were told good bye. As we look back over 1950-Sl, we can truthfully say — It was good while it lasted!!
