IT TAKES LEATHER BALLS TO PLAY RUGBYII Yanks Playing Rugby?? That question was answered with a resounding Yes! by 30 men of The Big ' E ' during the WestPac cruise. One victory and four defeats but a lot of good times were had by the team as it played and partied with teams from four nations. From Hong Kong to Kenya to Singapore, the team raised glasses with the opponents and spread the word — Yanks DO play rugby and we ' ll be back again!!!! VERTREPS UNREPS 20 22 H 1 M - ■t r i. 1 ir EASTER SUNDAY . . . VICTORY Ye that have faith to look with fearless eyes Beyond the tragedy of a world at strife. And know that out of death and night shall rise The dawn of ampler life: Rejoice, whatever anguish rend the heart. That God has given you the priceless dower To live in these great times and have your part In Freedom ' s crowning hour. That ye may tell your sons who see the light High in the heavens — their heritage to take — I saw the powers of darkness take their flight; I saw the morning break. Owen Seaman l I 25 Program for Afloat College Education Mr. John Swenson The Program for Afloat College Education is a cooperative effort between participating colleges and universities and the Chief of Naval Training, offering undergraduate courses to qualified Navy nnen at sea. Originally conceived as an off-duty voluntary education program for the crews of the Polaris Fleet, PACE has now been expanded to include surface ships and remote operating bases which heretofore have been unable to participate in conventional college courses. This program offers unprecedented opportunities for earning college degrees - either Associate of Arts or Bachelor of Arts - to seagoing personnel, whether their ships are in homeports, at sea, or in overseas ports. The PACE courses are conducted by qualified instructors provided by Chapman College, all of whom hold a masters or doctorate degree in their area of specialization. Applicants receive pre-registration counseling, classroom instruction, and any necessary out-of-class assistance required for the -successful completion of the course. During the cruise over three-hupdred crew members took advantage of the program which covered over twenty various courses. The only thing that stands between a man and further education is himself . Mr. Ken Masugi Not Pictured: Mr. Steven Pinegree Mr. Christopher Pasles 26 PREP PRE-DISCHARGE EDUCATION PROGRAM Among the numerous educational opportunities available to crew members of this aircraft carrier is PREP, designed to assist active duty servicemen obtain a high school diploma or to overcome educational deficiencies so they may enter a post-high school program of education or vocational training. The program is administered by the ship ' s Educational Services Office for the Veteran ' s Administration with absolutely NO COST to the serviceman. Textbooks are provided free to the student and are to be retained by the student when classes are completed. Moreover, courses taken under PREP are not charged against a person ' s educational benefits under the Veteran ' s G I Bill of Rights. Mr. Steve Nelson Mr. Tim Segal LT Tom Kowlok 27 15 JAN 75 . . . LTJG Parrot prepare to enjoy the cake representing simultaneous birthdays. 56 RADM Harris chats with one of the Air Wing ' s Commanding Officers. 57 On Nov. 25. 1 974, the crew of USS Enterprise CVAN-65 celebrated the ship ' s 1 3th birthday. It was on the same date in 1961 that the ship was commissioned as the world ' s largest and first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Since her commissioning she has won acclaim from just about every corner of the world, as well as up and down the Navy chain of command. Her continuing superior performance as a very successful instrument in implementing United States foreign policy, and her ability to provide a major portion of the defense of American shores, makes the ship one of the most important units in the Navy. Setting records is nothing new to Enterprise. Another one is set just about every time she goes to sea. In spite of this, her crew doesn ' t slack off, but instead keeps the ship in fine trim and ready to take on any task assigned. During those 1 3 years she has earned three Battle Efficiency E ' s, made nine deployments, and sailed around the world, yet has only been refueled twice. As far as is known, no other ship has ever accomplished those combined feats, nor are they likely to in the near future. Additionally, the ship has provided support for three air wings since commissioning, and was chosen as the ship in which the first two squadrons of the Navy ' s newest jet fighter, the F- 14 Tomcat, were to deploy outside the U.S. In addition to her assigned tasks. Enterprise crewmen have made other noteworthy contributions to the betterment of the world. Her crewmen have contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to charity both at home and abroad, rescued people from sinking and burning ships, participated in people-to-people civic action programs in every country visited, and conducted themselves in a manner that would make any organization proud. When considered altogether, the ship ' s accomplishments are rather outstanding for a teenager. 58 r.: gi2 ALL IN A DAY ' S WORK . . . CAPTAIN C.C. Shortly after leaving Mombasa, Kenya, the ship was notified that a cyclone had hit the small island nation of Mauritius and had left it practically helpless. Most all power and communications networks had been knocked out, water supplies contaminated, roads blocked, thousands of homes were destroyed or seriously damaged, and nine persons killed. The Navy ordered ENTERPRISE to turn Southward and proceed rapidly to the island for the purpose of providing disaster relief. On the afternoon of 1 1 Feb. 75, ENTERPRISE arrived and began the relief effort. For four days crewmen from ENTERPRISE, organized into working parties, continued aiding the Mauritians in numerous ways. Helicopters were used to survey damage done to the country ' s sugar cane fields, its main source of income, and to airlift sections of large piping to remote areas for the purposes of repairing water lines. Electricians assisted in getting electrical power restored by raising downed power poles, erecting new ones and restringing broken lines. Electronic equipment and navigational aids at the airport were repaired by ship technicians allowing air service to resume. The ship transferred 60,000 gallons of fresh water to the local community to alleviate shortages. Repairs were made to storm- damaged buildings in the city and the countryside belonging to both public and private agencies. Doctors and Corpsmen rendered medical assistance to children at an orphanage. Explosive ordnance disposal teams cleared roads that had been blocked by trees, enabling traffic to move once again. ENTERPRISE sailed from Port Louis on the afternoon of 15 Feb. 75, leaving behind a grateful people who will long remember the Americans who came to their assistance when needed. Rear Admiral W. L Harris and U.S. Ambassador Manhard discuss the disaster relief project with members of the Press. 242 One of the many volunteer working parties head for Port Louis and a long hard day of work to help put the island back together Ambassador Manhard, right, and Commissioner of Health Sir Harold Edward Walter shake in agreement over the emblem signifying U.S. Mauritius cooperation in the relief effort. ENTERPRISE Ordance Disposal Team prepares to remove a downed tree These men do not fool around: by the time they were through, this tree was firewood It ... and on 15 Feb. 75. ENTERPRISE said goodbye to the isle of Mauritius: leaving behind many new friends and feeling satisfaction in knowing they gave their all in a job WELL DONE. II 247 I Joining their fathers on May 1 5 for five days at sea were more than 1 50 sons of the officers and men of the ship and its embarked air wing, as well as a few sons of men missing killed in action in Vietnam. They were aboard for the five day transit from Hawaii to Alameda. Their ages ranged from eight to eighteen years old. Taking advantage of joining their fathers or other sponsors the Tigers had an opportunity to gain many new experiences. For most of them, the trip was their first taste of life at sea. All of them had the opportunity to see where and how their seniors were employed as part of the Enterprise-Air Wing Team. Flying to Hawaii from their home cities, the Tigers joined their Dads at Honolulu while the ship was making a short stopover at Pearl Harbor. After brief tours of the island, they boarded the ship. During the check-in procedures, each Tiger was given a plastic name tag and a berthing assignment. Each lad was also presented with a Tiger T-shirt, a ship ' s patch, honorary crewmember pin, an Enterprise postcard, and a welcome aboard brochure. The Tigers soon learned that life at sea, while different, has much in common with that ashore. They watched men at work and play. During the day they toured some of the ship ' s more than 3,000 spaces and were given brief lectures in navigation, deck seamanship, aircraft maintenance, weaponry, communications, flight operations, engineering, and ship operations. In addition, they were shown the ship ' s TV studios, had their pictures taken with their sponsors, and got close-up looks at various types of aircraft. The Tigers sensed that the cruise was nearing an end as they watched the aircraft of each embarked squadron depart the ship for a flight back to their home bases. Like their sponsors, fathers, or escorts, they also felt the air of excitement prevailing throughout the ship as it sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco Bay on its way to Alameda. Though Operation Tiger has come to an end for the boys, it was something that they will be talking about for years to come. 248 Captain, Middleton. and Casey Smith 249 MCPO and David Davis 250 K i ■gi .. jlir ' ' lK- Wk ' ■' ' ' y BL 9A K S j bH ■■ffls ' BKB 1 CDR and Bill Wilson CDR NT and Tom Crowell 251 AMSC and Ruben Alicea LCDR and John McKechnie CDR, Jimmie, and Patrick Kenney I 252 AKCS and Michael Adkins HMC and Greg Bullman }R and Cleck Irvin 253 MMCM, Chuck, and Mike Stephanski CDR and Steve Nakagawa CDR, Todd, and Jimmie Taylor EWCS and Jeffrey McKay 2SS ■« ■■9 ' 4 ' - % L J m ' %k f L Hi .Ml swr4fa(9 K Ktt W?
