tzxxrf f 4., .. , ..., -,A ..,.. , .-, It is the Navy's mission to protect our coasts, our sea- borne commerce, and far-flung possessions. Once war is forced upon us, we must take the offensive to win it. The Navy is the first line of offense, and Naval aviation as an advance guard of this line must deliver the brunt of the attack. Naval aviation cannot take the offensive from shore, it must go to sea on the back of the fleet. I do not believe aircraft on shore can ward off a bombing attack launched, perhaps, from carriers by night from an un- known point for an unknown objective Both for offense and defense, the fleet and Naval aviation are inseparable. Rear Admiral William A. Moffett, USN First Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics Admiral Moffett spoke these words in 1925, at a time when aircraft carriers and Naval aviation were a subject of much controversy in Navy circles. Today, almost fifty years later, his words still ring true. The mission of the Navy, though greatly expanded, has remained basically the same. History has proven the value of the aircraft car- rier and Naval aviation to the defense of our nation and to the successful implementation of national policy. USS ENTERPRISE CCVAN-655 is a far cry from the Navy's one aircraft carrier in existence in 1925. She represents a half a century of technological and engineering develop- ment as one of the most highly advanced weapons systems in the world. Yet, her mission, like those of her predeces- sors, is the same. She is always ready to answer the call, wherever it may lead. . ' - . I I 1 . -YI., Y- I I I 5. I ,V 4 u
