,sv 1 N X - ' is 5 if J I s Throughout the history of the United States, eight Navy ships have borne the name ENTER- PRISE. From the first, a 70-ton sloop captured from the British in 1775, to the eighth, the world's largest and first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, ships named ENTERPRISE have played key roles in shaping the course of United States history. Their circumstances and surroundings may have been different, but their mission has always been the same-serving the nation. The history of a ship is the history of the men who serve as her crew, for a ship without men is nothing more than a mass of steel and machinery. It takes men to bring the inanimate metal creation to life. The history of a ship is the history of the work and play, the good and the bad times, the blood, sweat and tears of the men who man her. This is the story of one period in the history of USS ENTERPRISE CCVAN-655 told in terms of the experiences of the men who lived that period. It covers the long, hard days and nights at sea and the times of rest and relaxation in the ports the ship visited. It includes the times they will want to re- member, and times they may prefer to forget. It is the story of men and a ship doing the job they are called upon to do. It is the story of men serving the nation.
