, ll ll IIlllllllllllllllllllllllllll sstt M sssss 1 SEPTEMBER 12, 1972 There are no words which adequately describe the emo- tions which accompany the departure of a ship from its homeport for an extended deployment. On September 12, 1972, there were many in evidence at Naval Air Sta- tion Alameda. Alongside the ship, ENTERPRISE crewmembers said goodbyes to loved ones. Some were short, some were drawn out. None were easy. Weeks of knowing the time and day of leaving were not enough to prepare for this moment of reality. Aboard ship, thousands waited in anticipation for the removal of all brows and the casting off of all lines. Mingled with the general excitement of sailors returning to the sea were as many personal feelings as there were men. For some, the sounding of the C note would mean a return to a familiar way of life. For others it would mean the beginning of a wide range of new experiences. For all, it meant the beginning of what was to be a nine month period away from home. 8 At the gates of NAS Alameda and in the waters of the San Francisco Bay, a different set of emotions was being displayed. Anti-war gro.ups, continuing their protest of United States policies in Southeast Asia, attempted to stage a symbolic blockade to disrupt ENTERPRISE's sailing. Several individuals attempted to get into the inner basin in small craft to come alongside the ship. They were thwarted by Navy and Coast Guard personnel in helicop- ters and patrol boats. Precisely according to schedule, ENTERPRISE slipped away from her berth and slowly glided out through the bay. Faces on the pier became mere specks in the distance, and well-wishers on the Golden Gate Bridge were soon passed. Before long, the bridge and the California shore- line had faded from sight, the last of the small boats es- corting the ship had headed back to land. ENTER- PRISE's sixth combat deployment to the Western Pacific had begun.
