Someone once said that those who have the gift of making friends are blessed, for. this is one of God’s best gifts. Each day, friendship is expressed in some way by the faculty and student body of Ensley High School. For this reason, we, the JACKET staff feel that the faculty and students possess the talent of making friends and are indeed blessed. Our wish is to capture through words and pictures, the expressions of friendship in the 1974 JACKET. A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere. Before him I may think aloud. ” KMKKSON mslev ’ • someone to whom we can turn, knowing that being with him is like coming home. USL SUPPLE PRIDE Whenyou re weary, feeling small. Finally in the fourth quarter. Knslcy put together a 75 yard drive that ended in the Woodlawn end zone with 1:52 left on the clock to take a 7-3 ietorv. Most of Knslcy s offense was provided b the running of P. G. Moore and Glen Thompson combined with the passing of David McKinnex to Ste e Bains and Joe Majors. Thompson ami Moore shared the duties with Mckinnex for the points needed to win the game. Mckinncy stepped in from the two with 1:52 remaining. The Jackets ending up on the winning side of 12-10 score did it with a defense of David Burks, Gene Gulden. Dannv White. Steve Webb, and Kim Logan. Offensively. David McKinney. I . G, Moore. Steve Bains, Ronnie Mitchell, and Glen Thompson did just enough to w in. but that’s all you need out of an offense. One of the biggest assets Etislc) had was punter Richard Parks. Richard kicked seven times for a 39.3 average. Ensley’s second touchdown came after David Burks intercepted a Gopher pass. Nine plays later McKinney passed to Ronnie Mitchell for the points. 99 Ensley 21 Bessemer 20 Ensley downed Jess Lanier 21-20 with a sting first on a 54 yard run by Glen Thompson and Richard Parks adding the PAT. Later in the first half. David McKinney scored and Parks kicked the PAT to make it 14-0. Later in the third period after a Tiger 'I'D, McKinney hit Joey Majors on a 46 yard scoring play pass. Again the PAT was good. As the Tigers started a threatening attack the Ensley defense of Kenny Jones. Randy Moore, and Steve Webb stopped the drive and held Jess Lanier. The final score. Ensley 21 — Bessemer 20. Ensley Jackets sting Jess Lanier Undefeated Jackets crush, Jackson — Olin Ensley 39 Western 16 Glen Thompson and Gary Rowell contributed two touchdowns apiece in leading the Ensley Yellow Jackets to a 39-16 w in over the Jackson — Olin Mustangs. In the first half Ensley led 13-0 ori the power of David McKinney’s second quarter one yard plunge, and Thompson’s one yard scoring drive. In the middle of the third period, Thompson added his second TD with a 3 yard run. Less than six minutes later Gary Rowell chalked up his first TD with a 22 yard run. Again, in the fourth quarter. Rowell answered with an 83 yard kickoff return. The final score. Ensley 39— Western 16. Banks . . . Battle of Defense as Ensley Seniors seek revenge nsijy , Easier 6 Banks 7 A well placed pass gave the Jets a 7-6 win over the Ensley ellow Jackets. But it actually seems unfair to say that one team won and the other lost. Both played like winners on defense, and each had mistakes. Gar Rowell opened the second half with a 79 yard kickoff return to the Jet 16. but Parks field goal try from the 9 sailed wide. Ensley’s score came about when Danny White lipped the ball into the end zone where Richard Parks fell on it for the touchdown. Jackets shut-out Ramsay K ' r Ensley 21 Ramsay 0 Defense is a big thing to Ensley as their stingy defense led the way as the once beaten Jackets rolled to a 21-0 win over the Ramsay Rams. Outstanding players were McKinney. Smith. Crumpton. Majors. Mitchell. Bains. Logan. Thompson, and Griffin. Easier 14 West End 33 VC iih EnsleyN second loss of the season, iheir hopes for the state playoffs were eliminated. West; End scored four play after the kickoff and twice again making it 21-0 at the half. Not unitl the final period did Ensley score. Only the second half passing of David McKinney gave Ensley a spark of hope. Anthony Smith wa tin leading Ensley rusher with 60 yards in 15 carries. Steve Bains had 6 receptions for 131 yards. Joey Majors had 1 for 17 yards, and Anthony Smith 1 for 11 yards. Easier defeats Minor fora Happy Homecoming! r V 9 . Ensley 13 Mi nor 12 The Ensley Yellow Jackets were fired up after two brilliant defensive plays by Kim Logan and Damn White to give the Jackets a 13-12 victory over Minor. Ensley struck first when McKinney arched a 39 yard TD pass to Ronnie Mitchell. Joey Majors stepped in front of a pass and raced in to give Ensley the lead — 13-12. Outstanding players were Randy Moore. Danny White, and Kim Logan. Once again, the Jackets win the game to make this Homecoming one to remember. Ensley ties Jones Valley Ensley 7 Jones Valley 7 It's funny how a tie football game affects people. The 7-7 tie with Jones Valley knocked away the Jackets last hope for a chance in the state playoffs. McKinney had a big night before getting hurt. He hit 9 passes for IB yds. and sneaked across for the Ensley touchdown. The Jackets scored on their first possession of the game with the help of Joey Majors and Steve Bains. Dean Griffin kicked the FAT. Jones Valley rame back with a score in the second half. Stan Crumpton directed the Jackets after McKinney's shoulder injury. Neither Jones alley nor Ensley could win. el one side celebrated and one side cried. Ripped Raiders leaves Easley 7-2-1 Tin- Jackals, forced to install some new starters because of injuries, came through with a 170 season ending win over Phillips. Stan Crumpton, subbing for McKinney, directed the team. Ensley went 77 yards for its first points. Crumpton went in for the TD and Dean Griffin kicked the PA'I. Another touchdown and a field goal from the 28 by Edgar Bearden gave the Jackets the victory and left a 7-2-1 record. iCKet$ Ensley 17 laws 0 ■ liiiiiiiiiiilfiiiiiiiiiiit The 1973 Seniors ■giig lllwllliiiingmniii WHMMHHWWWMHMWWff Couches and Managers Coaches Front Oui li Tin l. r.
