JACKET Ensley High School is composed of numerous, dedicated groups which serve the school in various capacities. The groups consist of individuals who strive for meaningful results in their endeavors. These individuals are unique in every respect. In the 1973 JACKET we wish to express through pictures and ideas the value and significance of these individuals’ efforts at Ensley High School. We wish to show that “Individuality is everywhere to be spared and respected as the root of everything good. Richter l 'Every individual has a place to fill in the world, and he is important in some respect, whether he chooses to be so or not.” Hawthorne 3 Human facuities are common, but that which converges these faculties into my identity, separates me from every other man. Giles 5 Individual effort is, after all, the grand thing. Spurgeon 7 rrYou are tried alone; alone you pass into the desert; alone you are sifted by the world. ” F. W. Coach Sparks may have a few words for the defense. The offense staggered Carver under a heavy load of 41 points, but the defense relaxed three times as Carver picked up three touchdowns, the shortest from 52 yards out, giving Ensley a 41-20 opening season win. Junior quarterback David McKinney and the running of Mike Armstead were the chief offensive weapons for the Jackets. McKinney completed 11 of 19 passes for 133 yards. He used six different receivers with P. G. Moore leading the way with three receptions for 33 yards. Ensley found the end zone on its second possession with McKinney scoring from the 12. Rogers kicked the point. The score was 3 to 7, Carver's lead, when Ensley countered with anotlier TDto make it 14-8, but Carver tied it up. Ensley then moved 63 yards to go ahead 21-14. Ensley scored 3 more times before the night was over. The final score was 41-20. Easley Jackets Slopped the Gophers Ensley 25 Huey town 7 Shocked by Hueytown's early 7-0 lead. Coach Sparks Ensley Yellow Jackets flew back with an effective ground attack and a big-play defense to rip the Golden Gophers 25-7. On the first play from the Gopher 21, P. G. Moore raced in for Ensley s first score. David Rogers tied the game 7-7. Backs Mike Armstead and Glen Thompson accounted for the 53 yard drive which gave the Jackets a 13-7 advantage. After a Gopher fumble recovered by E. N. Moore, Armstead was able to make the TD highlighted by David McKinney's passing. The Gopher attack was stopped as defensive back Bobby Statum recovered a fumble at the Jacket 18. Later in the fourth quarter, Ensley drove 47 yards for the final score set up by a 19 yard pass from Sam Alfano to Joe Juliano, which lead to a 25-7 victory. Armstead had 87 yards in 21 carries and Thompson another 75 yards in 14 carries. Outstanding defenders for the Jackets were guard Gene Caddcn, linebacker Randy Moore and end Joe Tidwell. Jess Lanier Adds to Easley's Victories Easier 19 Jess Lanier 0 Ensley's Yellow Jackets scored all of their points within 16 minutes in the first half and then fought the Lanier Tigers in a defensive battle as the unbeaten Jackets banked the purple 10-0. Defensive end Kim Logan intercepted a Tiger aerial five plays after the opening kickoff. The Jackets were in to score in eight plays with quarterback liavid McKinney sneaking over a fourth and goal call on the one yard line. Logan again pounced on a loose ball after a grinding tackle. Eight plays later the Jackets had another score and again it was fourth and goal. McKinney hit Armstead up the middle for the touchdown. Following a 50 yd. punt the Jackets were on their way for their final points. After two running plays, McKinney hit Steve Bains for 52 yards and a first down at the Tiger nine. McKinney darted in for tl e score. Ensley led 19-0. Etefensivc standouts were tackle Steve Webb, linebacker David Earnest, and Logan had a big night for tlje Jackets. ■ Easley High School jackets played offense for about 8 minutes against Phillips, but that was enough to keep the 10th ranked team undefeated. Coach Bill Sparks team scored all its points in the final 8 minutes of the game to take a 16-0 win over Phillips. For 3 quarters the game was scoreless until finally it took the passing arm of David McKinney to get the Jackets on the track. Ensley's first chance at a score came when Joey Majors recovered a fumbled punt to give the Jackets a first and goal at the Raider 9. Phillips held and took possession of the ball. Finally, Scott Marlow gave Enslcy the boost it needed, intercepting a pass and returning it to the 44. Front there Enslcy marched in for the store by passes from McKinney to Bains and Alfano to Majors, making tlte score 7-0. The Jackets second score came on a pass from the 3 yd. line to make it 14-0. Top Enslcy defenders were Kim Logan, Gregg George, and David Earnest. Phillips the Arrival of Victorious Times Ensley 16 Phillips 0 Ensir v 19 Banks 41 The excitement and suspense you would normally expect from the meeting of two number 1 undefeated teams half way through the season just weren't In the game plan that FWday night at Legion Field. Determination, spirit, and the desire to win were the things that kept the Ensley High Yellow Jackets going strong throughout the game. The Jets fought the Ensley defense with a tlirce touchdown manage in the 2nd quarter which led to a 41-19 defeat. It just wasn’t the Jacket's night. Ensley quarterback, David McKinney, passed for 2 touchdowns, hitting Steve Bains from the 3 and Mike Armstead from the 22. Tyran Early blocked a punt and Joe Tidwell fell on it for the other Ensley score. Defensive end Kim Logan was the outstanding defensive player on the field and a big asset to the Ensley team. Although the Jackets were defeated, Ensley High School is still proud of the determination and good sportsmanship the Jacket team displayed. irul Ramsay Beginning Troubles Easley 20 Ramsay 27 Ensley watched in shock, a 27-20 loss against Ramsay at Legion Field Homecoming night. The Rams, behind 20-13 at the half, took advantage of a partially blocked 3rd period punt and a 50 yard bomb to put up the points it needed, while the Jackets were held scoreless. Mike Armstead provided most of Ensley's offense . He rushed 32 times for 123 yards to pace the Jackets. Ensley charged again and again but all attempts failed. The first half, which belonged to Ensley, the Jackets put up 2 touchdowns. The first came on a 4 yard run by Mike Armstead and the second on a 61 yard drive with Armstead going in again, this time from the 3 yard line. Even though the Jackets were behind, their determination was well displayed, because they never gave up. West End the Last °f Easley's Defeats Easley 0 West End 7 It would have been nice for Ensley High School's Yellow Jackets to blame some confused officials or tlie faulty clock for its 7-0 loss to West End, and you can be sure those things were quite annoying to Ensley fans. The confused officials made tilings interesting at the beginning of the 4th quarter when they gave West End 5 extra yards. Then with tlie Jackets battling in the 4th quarter, the clock unintentionally started cheating. Tlie malfunction caused the seconds to skip and end tlie game too quickly. Ensley used the running of Mike Armstead to push to West End's 23 in the 1st quarter. Armstead's running and tlie passing of Bobby Statum and David McKinney to push to the 11 in tic 2nd quarter and a fumble recover)' by tackle Randy Moore, to get to tlie 17 in tlie 4th quarter were the Jackets key threats to West End. But each time the West End defense held. Armstead had 72 yards in 17 carries to lead Ensley. The loss gave the Jackets a 4-3 record and also the last defeat of the season. Ensley 3 Shades Valley 0 Shades Valley saw their undefeated season go down the drain as the Ensley jackets outfought the Moundes led by defensive end Kim Logan. Logan intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble as the Jackets defeated the Moundes 3-0 on a 16 yard field goal by David Rodgers. Both teams ran the ball all night but Ensley held the upper hand. The 1st quarter saw both teams not score. But Ensley's Logan intercepted a pass at its own 41 to stop the Moundes only real threat of the game. In the 2nd quarter, Barry Huff recovered a fumble on the Valley 18. But Ensley was only able to get to the 6 yard line before calling on David Rodgers to kick a 16 yard field goal which turned out to be tire winning score. Ensley came out In the 2nd half and played a ball control offense. Valley drove to the Ensley 13 but was stopped by a Randy Moore Interception. Outstanding players on offense were David McKinney, Glen Thompson, and Kim Logan. Shades Valley a Small Score a Big Win Jones I alley Victory in the Last Seconds Ensley 14 Jones Valley 13 Hie Ensley Yellow Jackets and the Jones Valley Brownies collided in a crucial battle which ended in a victory for Ensley. The Ensley Yellow Jackets scored 2 touchdowns in the last 5 minutes to defeat the Brownies 14-13. The Jackets scored the winning points on tlie last play of the ball game, as quarterback David McKinney passed 8 yards to Ricliard Parks for a touchdown and then calmly to Joey Majors for a two-point conversion. After Jones Valley's 13-0 lead, the Jackets took the kickoff and went 71 yards where McKinney sneaked over from the 1 for tlie first TD. David Rogers missed the kick and Ensley trailed 13-6. Tire winning drive covered 86 yards after Jones Valley was forced to punt In the final two minutes. McKinney connected on 6 passes in the drive with Steve Bains. Joe Juliano. David Burks and Ricliard Parks doing tlie catching. The payoff came on the pass to Parks and Majors. Woodlawn Leaves Easley a 7-3 Season Ensley 20 Woodlawn 6 The name of the game was pass as the Ensley Yellow Jackets downed the Woodlawn Colonels 20-6 in the season-ender for both teams. Quarterback David McKinney passed for 2 Jacket touchdowns and engineered a 43 yard drive behind the running of Glen Thompson for the third score. A sting)' Ensley defense leaded by Gregg George, Scott Marlow, Kim Logan, and David Earnest gave up only 15 yards to Woodlawn. After the Colonels scored, the Jackets moved 64 yards on the arm of McKinney with a TD pass to Steve Bains early in the 2nd quarter. Rogers booted the point. The Jackets final score came on the 43 yard drive with Richard Parks going one yard for the score. Rogers split the uprights. The final score ending the game and the season was 20-6. 112 DAVID ROGERS TYRAN EARLY Seniors JERRY JONES STEPHEN FEBRES JOE TIDWELL WAYNE HARBIN GREGG GEORGE RANDY BALLARD PHILLIP RUSSELL SCOTT MARLOW Seniors and Captains CLARK ANDREWS Coaches Left to right: Coach Sparks, Coach Syphurs, Coach Crenshaw, Coach Gilmore, Coach Tucker, and Coach Deaton.
