Roy Smith points out to Nancy Gosnell, llilISlI Confucius once was asked what he would do first if he were to administer a country. lt would certainly be to correct language, he replied. His listeners were sur rised. P rlWhy?sl The Master's answer: lf language is not correct, then what is said is not what is meant, if what is said is not what is meant, then what ought to be done remains undone, if this remains undone, morals and arts will deterio- rate, if morals and arts deteriorate, justice will go astray, if justice goes astray, the people will stand about in helpless confusion. Hence there must be no arbitrariness in what is said. This matters above everything. Even in today's modern world, lan- guage, both written and spoken, is still our chief means of communication. One main objective of Enka High School's English Department is helping students learn to express themselves clearly and correctly, whether they will be filling out college applications or applying for a job.
