Iune 6- Dear Diary: VVhen the people back home see the Girls State photo- graphs they took of us Sunday, they'll never be able to picture all the ac ivities welve been crowding in. Nominating conventions, campaigning, and elections galore! Yester- day the I2 model cities elected officials. with lo Anne and Gloria selected as commission- ers of Grimmett and Bennett citiesg lylarvella as mayor of lohnson cityg Veldena as Short city reporter, and Nancy, treasurer of Holi- day city. All four of us Sooners were elected as voting delegates to the State nominating convention, and later at the Boomer con- vention, our sole Boomer, Nlarvella, was elected party caucus chairman. And then today the most important thing of all+state elections. Our own lVlarvella was elected governor to reign over 1950 Girls' Stateg the first governor ever to come from Enid. Two other Enid girls received coveted state of- fices: Nancy, State Treasurer, and lo Anne, Clerk of the Supreme Court. Veldena and Gloria held the appointed positions of Chair- man of the State Board of Nledical Iixam- iners and Chairman of the State Board of Agriculture respectively. VVe've learned more in these two days about government and politics and elections than in our entire lives! Thursday, Iune 8-Dear Diarv: How can they pack so tnuch fun and information in each day? Yesterdays inaugural dinner. ceremony, and reception afterward: the thrill of meeting Governor Turner: the song he composed for usg setting up legislature and Tin- Qurii lvl.-xcz.-t7iNi- . otys' gfafe By RONALD CARLBERG Did you happen to pass the Legion Hall about 9 o'clock on the morning of Iune IO, WSOP If so, you probably saw eleven Enid High School students getting ready to leave for Norman and Oklahoma Boys' State. Thefe boys. lerry Herzberg, Karl Geis, Rod- ney Holcomb, lere Tresner, Harold Singer, George Blumenauer, lohn larboe, lack XVag. ner. Ronald Carlberg, Richard Gonrady, ami hlax Dixon, were on their way to the fastest week of their lives, Paul Griffin had been planning to join in the fun and learning. but two days before had laid himself up with a second degree sunburn. Arriving at Boys' State. the fellows re- ceived two T-shirts, the standard garb of all citizens and assignments to the cities where they were to stay. The first afternoon was speiit in getting acquainted with the fellows from the other towns, while on a tour of the O.U. campus, That night the boys got their first taste of what Boys' State was going to be. That was when they attended their first 'ilecturef' Lectures were predominant during the stay there, but they were all so interestingly pre- sented, that while thev were a bit of school- ing. they hardlv seemed drv enough to c . , . t actuallv be called lectures. Butithe leaders didn't do all the work. Once they had gotten acquainted, the boys started to work. Sunday night they held city party caucuses to choose who were to serve as representatives at the county and state conventions. The group was divided into two parties, the Boomers and the Soon- ers, and before long those two groups really had the fireworks going. The next day those conventions were held, and the partyislates were chosen along with the state partv leaders. These leaders then drew up a platform which was later ap proved by all the party members. But VVednesdav morning was when they really had fun! That was election dav, and the 'boys turned out one hundred per cent to do their part for their party. After voting, they all waited anxiously for the returns. tiiontinued on Page Sm courts and learning their functions by actual participation -- all of this, and vre still have time for swimming and teimis and get- togethers in the dorms! l'.S. The food here is wonderfulg we've all put on pounds. Saturday, Iune I0 Dear Diarv: lr seems so strange to be home again! Tliey gave us a gala welcome here in linid-a parade, royal reception, and lots of partiesg but all of us are secretly wishing we were back at Girls' State, reliving those last few wonderful days. lior instance, that marvelous Girls' State- Boys' State Dance--a perfect climax to a memorable week. Three hundred sixteen Girls' Statcrs in their flufliest formals were on hand to greet the eight busloads of Boys' Staters from O.U. -and what an evening! Then there was the picnic the next night. and finally the farewell assembly Saturday filontinued on Page 87j
