This event, the most magnificent musical affair held in this part of our coun- try, saw' the Enid High School Band and individual soloists pervading the atmosphere. The Mass Tri-State Barrel and the String Orchestra gave Enid High School the honor of accepting ten of her stuelents to participate in the concerts. In the String Orchestra were four Enid High students, Mary o Dix play- ing cello and Mary Marcia Buchanan, anice Denker and Martha Cooper all playing srolrns The Mass Band was strengthened by the servrce of Bob Evans s clarinet Bill Bo lenes flute Tom Klerns tenor saxophone ohn Boaz s bass horn Dan Schulte s trom bone and Robert Erresens oboe The competition rn solo events at Tri State was keen with the best students of five states participating The rudgrng standards rank with those of national contests anel the men who served as judges were nationally 1CC0UI1l7Cfi rn the field of I'l1llSlC In the percussion department Enid was represented by two drrrm solos and a drum quintet The soloists Bill Humphrey anel David Orwrg placed seconel drvrsron with the drum quintet composed of Cynthia Thomas David Orwrff Bill Richards Bill Humphrex and Ronald Parker also win ning a second drvrsron Merwrn Newberry Gene Gott and Krauel represented the woodwind department w ith solos hderwrn and Gene both Bb clarr netrsts placeel second dnrsron with oe Krauel on the saxophone placing second also Enid boasted a representation of eight pianists rn the piano solo contest Patty Bon ham Lois Hobart Mars Esther Selby and Esa Lou Hanna won Hrst drsrsron with Gloria Battern Mary Ellen hfathers Nevelxn Sweener and Arlene Smith w inning seconel dnrsron To these scholars of musre we grse our praise for so splendrdh representing them selxes and Enid High School rn the l4th Annual Tri State Band festnal This was not the first nor the last contest in which these contestants participated At Shawnee during the month of Ivfarch the drum quintet David Orwrg Brll Humphrey and iX4erwrn Newberrr all recersed Erst or second elrvrsron awards ln the District Contest at Alsa mans students won their right to participate rn the State Contest w hrch was held at Norman Two drummers from Enid High were rn the State Contest Both Bill Humphres and Dasrd Orwrg after Settllrg splendid records at Shawnee and during Trr State recened Errst Drxrsron ratings at Alsa which entrtled them to enter the state contest Your other sudents each in different fields also won their right to the State Contest bs their per formances at Alva. Merwin Newberry placed second in the clarinet division. A first divi- sion rating was won in twirling by the nimble Engers of Ioan Blake. Vida Cheno- weth on her marimba won first anel Niary Esther Selby at the piano placeel second in their respective contests. The state' solo contest was helel at Nor- man, April 25.
