THE CHEROKEE STRIP When our Cherokee Strip was opened In September of 'ninety-three, There were only a few simple homes, Where Enid would grow to be. But settlers came in wagons, From many distant towns, To build the firm foundation Of a city, and make their homes. There were for their friends, the Indians, 'I'o make firm friendship's bandg - And Indians, too., for enemies To destroy their planted land. But in spite of every hardship These brave men found in their way, They managed to prosper with something gained For every passing day. Enid is now a metropolis That is talked of far and wideg And the people who live in the Cherokee Strip Tell of this city with pride. We give all the praise to our fathers Who came in 'ninety-three, And we all look forward with visions To the Enid that is to be. Embelene Swartz, '22. Five
