ilaBtpr’s ®o She (Elaas of 13T0 The staff of the 1970 yearbook has asked me to prepare a message for our graduates. Aware of my shortcomings as an author of literary sentiments, they have presented me with sample messages of other Headmasters of other years. In these messages, I find a general tone of congratulations to the grad¬ uates and also expressions of confidence and best wishes in all their future en¬ deavors. The Class of 1970 should be well aware that their new Headmaster accorded to his first graduating class a full measure of these accolades. How¬ ever, I would like to reflect on several other points. From experience with my own and other yearbooks, I venture to predict that many of you will be browsing through these pages many years and many miles from 1970, and Boston. I know that the memories of your teachers and classmates will be pleasant and that all their faces will be forever as they appear in this book. However, I also predict that you will not easily remember the striking events of your graduation period. Let me recall to your memory some significant episodes from your last year in high school: The first landings on the moon were symbolic of the scien¬ tific state of the world you were about to enter; the movement of student unrest and open rebellion were indicative of an insistence by youth that their opinion be considered in decisions affecting their lives; the demands of all minority groups that our democratic process recognize and react to needs which could not be won by minority vote at the polls; the national mood of resentment against leaders of government and the military who had not been able to end a fifty-year involve¬ ment in almost continous warfare; the thoughtful protests in Boston and else¬ where during which hundreds of thousands of Americans expressed their deep desire for peace; the unwillingness of the vast majority of peaceful protestors to allow violent methods to obscure their message. Here in 1970, I wonder how these events will appear to you as you read of them again in future years. In this accelerating age of America, it is probable that many more significant events are in store for you. Our country will be in your hands at that time and I know that it will be in good hands.
