Ijgaii Master ' s iHgHsagg ®ti (Mass of 1969: As Head Master I welcome the opportunity which the publication of your Year Book presents to extend to the members of the Class of 1969, individually and collectively, the best wishes of the faculty and the alumni. Yours has been a good class and, in many ways an excellent one. As such it will be well remembered by faculty and students alike. It has endeavored to make the most of the opportunities for scholarship, serv- ice, and leadership which a large school such as ours presents. All of you have found in the spirit of English High, I am sure, an ideal of service to mankind which will be a powerful influence for good in all your endeavors. You have learned that those who give generously of them- selves gain immeasurably in return. These are days that are trying the spirit and heart of man to the utmost. The world needs your youth, your strength, your thoughtful consideration, your steadfast purpose as never before for the long, hard, persistent effort that men of good will everywhere must make if our differences are to be resolved and peace and good will are to triumph in the world in the years that lie ahead. Whatever your lot in life may be, you have been encouraged by precept and example to give to each day’s task your best effort, to find a satisfaction in the pursuit of excellence, and to measure up to the chal- lenges and meet the responsibilities that will be yours in a democratic society. If you will but continue in your pursuit of excellence to develop the essential good that lies within you, you will become a man of honor and achievement through service to city, state, and nation in keeping with the fine tradition of your school. May the spirit of English High, the spirit of brotherhood, help you to move toward the finest of all goals — peace on earth and good will to men in your future endeavors. May God bless your every effort for good. Joseph L. Malone Head Master

in fHmortam “No work begun, shall ever pause for death” Robert Browning £H attbcm 3 1 . Sluggimi The English High School community was recently saddened by the death of one of its most dynamic teachers. Mr. Matthew J. Ruggiero. An outstanding mathematics teacher, he brought to his classroom an understanding of students which, sometimes is unique in a teacher. His rapport with many sophomore classes in his tenure at the Brighton Annex prepared many a student for the eventual success achieved in the upper class. A graduate of the English High School himself in 1945, Mr. Ruggiero received honor grades in history and Latin, and proved him- self an outstanding athlete excelling in track and on the football field. Appointed to the English High School Faculty in 1957, his continual influence on E.H.S. men is still his lasting tribute. Although taken from us in the prime of life, his high standards of scholarship and dedication remain with us as his legacy. His contribu- tion most assuredly was service to mankind through honor and achieve- ment.
