o RETIREMENTS 5o This year marked the retirement of two fine members of the Faculty: Major W ilham J. McCluskey of the Department of MiHtary Science and Drill, and Mr. Andrew L. Gemmel of the English Department. The Major, as he was affectionately known to the upper classes at E. H. S., came to the school as drill instructor in 1960, after many years of service at Dorchester High. Although a Master in the School for a comparatively short time. Major McCluskey cer- tainly has made an indelible impression on those fortunate enough to fall under his command. Mr. Gemmel, who was appointed to English High in 1956 after many years of service at Roxbury Memorial, brought to the English Department a fine faculty in the instruction of the basic fundamentals of his subject. His enthusi- astic approach and dynamic attitude should be firmly entrenched in the memories of those fortunate enough to stud} under him. Forced to retire prematurely by ill health in November 1962, Mr. Gemmel ' s forceful presence will be missed by the faculty and student body. IN MEMORIAM It was with the deepest regret that the faculty and student body learned of the death, early in 1963, of Mr. John E. Bowler, a teacher in the school from 1931 - 1961, and Acting Head of the Business Department for several years. Daniel J. Foley died this year at the age of 84; a teacher of Business Edu- cation at E. H. S. from 1911 - 1949, he was Head of the Business Department for 35 years. John D. Shore, a member of the Mathematics Department for 30 years t until his retirement in 1955, also passed on during the past year.
