Editorial Sidney J. Spiegel The time existed, a few centuries ago, when it was imma- terial that most of the world ' s population did not know how to read or write; did not know the simplest rules of mathematics; or did not know about the political and social systems which have been created. For in those days most f)eople were, in fact, if not in name, slaves to a system governed by an oligarchy. It was assumed that these rulers knew all that anyone needed to know. Today, we in the Western world engage in self-rule. This, however, is a very risky business. We now know that ruling ourselves is not a sufficient end in itself — for if we rule badly, we may be thrust back into a state of slavery. The task we face today is not merely to rule ourselves, but to rule wisely — so wisely that our own dignity along with the dignity of all man- kind is brought to light. And from where will this wisdom to rule come? It comes, of course, through the adventures of learning and understand- ing. We have come to learn that knowledge may be a dangerous thing. The search for knowledge, understanding, and wisdom must be pressed forward ever more energetically. For we know that whatever problems knowledge may bring us, they hardly transcend the distress created by those of ignorance. Today, as we are leaving English High School, we have acquired something more than just a diploma, we have acquired a foundation for the knowledge necessary to the proper guidance of both our lives and those of all mankind.

President ' s Message Barry E. Hickman As the Class of 1963 completes its graduating year and leaves the shelter of the great English High School, it is fitting that each member pause to consider his accomplishments and future plans. We entered as eager freshmen in the annex, full of ambi- tion and hope. As sophomores we transferred to the main build- ing and were determined to make good our goals. In our three years here under the fine guidance and teachings of our head- master, Dr. Malone, and our many teachers, we have accom- plished our aim, that is, to graduate. Some of us will continue our education at one of the many institutions of higher learning. Before us lie years of study, more difficult than we have ever experienced. But we will not complain for the realization that something worthwhile can be accomplished only through perseverence. Some of us will immediately enter the business world. A world in which today the competition is greater than ever be- fore; a world into which thousands of high school and college students enter yearly. Others of us will enter the military service where there are unlimited possibilities for advancement. Whichever path we choose, problems will confront us, but let our desire to succeed be the incentive which will drive us on to greater efforts and greater success. No matter how successful we become let us not forget our school motto: Be Clean, Be Square, Be Courteous.
