EDITORIAL Early in our junior year, Russia launched Sputnik I. We all remember how quickly critics condemned American edu¬ cation for not having beaten the Soviets to the count-down. Indeed, the re-appraisal of our educational system is still fresh in our minds. Leaders, once again regarding education as the cornerstone of de¬ mocracy, supported the public’s demand for better schools and higher educational standards. The students — you and I — felt the true impact of the resultant reforms. At The English High School, as across tl e entire nation, scholarship standards were raised to better equip us as we stood on the threshold of space. Productivity, more homework and greater respect for discipline became classroom watchwords. The three R’s were not sufficient in the Space Age. The educational belt was being tightened. Now intensified studies of the sciences and of advanced mathematics were projected. Necessity for higher education was dramatically illustrated by the increased demand for college graduates who could manipulate a slide- rule. And many of us, intent upon terminating our formal education on Commencement Day, found ourselves applying to colleges during the great American educational renaissance. When the pages of this yearbook have become yellow with age, we will reflect upon all our school days. Our thoughts, however, will turn first to our years as upperclassmen, for with each Red-rocket success, we men of the Blue and Blue felt a renewed jolt: surpassing the Soviet lead would be our responsibility. The insurance of our democracy, its eco¬ nomics and the general welfare would soon be dependent on us. As men of English High, let us go on to make the Space Age an era of honor and further achievement for the American way of life. —DAVID W. HALEY, Editor-in-Chief
