Class Oration To these our graduation exercises, we, of the class of 1953, bid you a hearty welcome. We welcome especially our parents whose sacrifices have enabled us to acquire a good education. That education has been made possible by the people of the City of Boston, a city dedicated to the principle of equal educa- tional opportunity for all. To our devoted Head Master, and to the members of the faculty, we express our gratitude for their constant counsel and instruction. It is an honor and a privilege to graduate from English High School. The governor of cur Commonwealth on the occasion of the one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the school, referred to its estab- lishment as one of the most significant developments in the history of free pub- lic education in America. His Excellency paid further tribute to this school: It has sent forth thousands upon thousands of loyal sons, their mcral fibre strengthened by the inculcation of salutary principles. In peace and in war, these sons of English High School have won dis- tinction. They have played a vital part in the civic, the economic, and the cultural life of many communities . . . they have built for their Alma Mater a reputation second to that of no similar school in the United States. It is v ith pride, therefore, that we of the Class of 1953 enter the ranks of the alumni. As classmates we shall go forward together in the unity of our cherished friendships and in our loyalty to our school. Through all the years we shall be ever mindful that our Alma Mater holds before us a living ideal - Honor and Achievement through Service to Man- kind. Thomas A. Recupero, President, Class of 1953 (24)
