As the Class of 1952 leaves English High School it finds itself faced with the identical problems that a total of eighteen graduating classes have faced before us: the problem of entering a world engaged in, or threatened with, war. Let us look back in the history of our country and see why this is so. Since the founding of the English High School in 1821, our country has taken part in four wars which have affected graduates of the English High School: the Civil War, 1861-1865; the Spanish-American War, 1898; World War I, 1914-19- 18; and World War II, 1939-1945. I imagine that the world in those past years appeared to English High graduates as dark and hopeless and as near to total destruction as it does to us today. I do not mean to scoff at war, because everyone knows what a truly hor¬ rible thing it is. We have all witnessed the products of the ravages of war. We have seen that the aftermath of a war is as costly in life and property as the war itself. Yet my purpose is not to send the Class of 1952 into the world with the idea that all hopes and dreams will soon be shattered by universal war. There is still more hope in the world than the ' news reports would have us believe. I have heard two profound statements which provoke hopeful thought: (1) People thought the cannon would mark the end of the world because it could penetrate almost every then-known defense, and (2) the old adage that for ev¬ ery offense there is a defense. These two statements, of course, pertain to the newly-developed atomic weapons. Now that we are men we are faced with a man ' s problem — that of sec¬ urity. Therefore, we must face this situation not with the narrow, easily fright¬ ened minds of children, but with the broad, far-seeing, composed intelligence of adults. We must remember that although life is not a bed of roses, neither is it a briar patch; and we must go forth with faith in the future. Paul W. Carey, ' 52 Editor EHS

Downey. As announced in the press of the nation, the E. H. S. Relay Team won a magnificent victory at the Pennsylvania Relay Carnival held on Saturday, Ap¬ ril 29th. The members of the team are now recognized at the two mile relay champions of the United States. With weather conditions the worst in forty- two years, through mud and rain, they completed the two miles about 100 yards ahead of their nearest rival, a high school from New York City. They brought athletic distinction to their school, their coach, and to themselves. Our top six half milers made the trip along with Coach Cliff Ronan. They were Gene Ellis, George King, Bill King, William Tatum, George Campot, and Ed Allen. As a token of their feat, the school received a large plaque along with a beautiful sterling silver cup, which will be retained by the school for one year. The first school winning the relay event for the third time will retain permanent possession of the cup. It is our sincere hope and desire that in sub¬ sequent years, E. H. S. may be fortunate enough to earn the privilege of re¬ taining the cup.
