FROM A LETTER, DATED MARCH lo, 1949, FROM MR. DOWNEY TO HENRY A. SASSERNO PRESIDENT OF THE ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION In the last World War there were over 5,500 E. H. S. men in action. Of these, more than 230 made the supreme sacrifice. Many others— the number is uncertain— were physically and permanently handicapped. These patriotic services deserve the highest recognition and it is very fitting for the alumni to do so by means of a permanent memorial in the School. The Memorial itself is unique. The location is on the second floor alcove, Montgomery Street side. The School Department is reconstructing the alcove so that it will be in harmony with the Memorial. On each of the two walls will be bronze plaques, approximately 40 x 50 , representing each of the Four Freedoms. Each of these four plaques is very impressive. It is the most com- pelling illustration that I have ever seen of the Four Freedoms. In gold letters, just above the arch of the alcove are the words — ' E. H. S. ACCLAIMS HER SONS. In the center of the alcove is the dedicatory plaque, approximately the same size as the others, and on it are these words : FROM MANY LANDS THEIR FOREBEARS CAME IN SEARCH OF FREE- DOM. IN ITS DEFENSE THEY FOUGHT. MANY DIED. GOD GRANT THAT THEIR SACRIFICE MAY MAKE STRONGER THE BONDS THAT UNITE ALL MANKIND. The American Flag will be on one side; the State Flag on the other. This Memorial will serve to bring home constantly to each one of the coming generations of E. H. S. boys the fundamental ideals of America. It has a great educational purpose, a deep patriotic influence, and is extremely timely in an era when our form of government is being challenged. It is a rare visual representation of those ideals for which our boys have fought and died. Copyright by John F. Paramino, Sculptor
