THE CHALLtl bi: CjniduateS 1948: Today seemed so for ahead, three or four years ago. Yet here it is — graduation, or is it commencement, — call it what you like. I think, perhaps, commencement is better, for now your real career is beginning. If you will reflect for a moment on the training you hove had in this school, you will con- clude that that which has helped you most has been self-training. The instructors have sought to teach you how to learn, but the learning must be done by you. This will be true during life. Your education will never cease. Regardless of age, there is always much for us to learn. Observation, analysis, interpretation — we must use them always for our own good and that of others. If we do this, we shall not follow false guides. Look forward — not backward. Life is alluring and challenging. Do not fear it. Welcome it as a means of service to God and to mankirid. A selfish life is sure to become on unhappy one; — thoughtf ulness of others is the bosis of true happiness. Wherever you go, my vital interest will follow you. Each of you is a graduate of the oldest and one of the greatest of American secondary schools. It is a school that is very proud of its alumni body. Conspicuously among ail high school graduates, every E. H. S. alumnus retains a personal loyalty to his school. This loyalty is deserved, for as you reflect upon your high school experience you will find that in English High School the highest ideals of American democracy have been in effect always. Do not forget the wording on our Memorial tablet in honor of the E. H. S. boys of World War II: — MAY GOD BLESS THEM AND EACH ONE OF YOU. 1 1 E. H. 5. ACCLAIMS liCH SDNS From many lands their forbears come in search of freedom. In its defense they fought, — many died. God grant that their sacrifices may make stronger the bonds which unite all mankind. Head Master
