BOYS OF ' 45 America — The Land We Love Not long ago a young veteran who had just returned from the front greeted me down town on Summer Street. He was bronzed and physically fit. He was an E. H. S. man, — inexpressibly happy at being home again in, — as he put it — in the good old U. S. A. Speaking earnestly to me, he said, — I have just returned from Burma. The Golden Gate at San Francisco looked pure gold to me and to all the fellows with me. I never really fully appreciated my own country before. You know, I feel that it would be a wonderful thing for every American to have the experience I have had — to be away from this country for one full year. Only then could he really appreciate the United States of America — what it really means to say — ' I am an American. ' E. H. S. boys have repeatedly said this same thing to me while visiting school after their trips to and from every part of the globe. There is no country like it anywhere. This is the direct testimony of our own boys who now have travelled far and wide. Yes, of course, it is home, and that is everything. This means many things. I do not need to mention them, nor describe them. They are just what we consider home, — neighbors, home ways of doing things, — our family, our friends, our church, our school, our pals. To each one of us — this is America. To safeguard all of these — we fight; since they are in danger — we risk all for their protection, and preservation. The boys of ' 76 won for us our right to be free and independent; the boys of ' 61 preserved our Union; in ' 17 they first went abroad as an armed force to defend our shores. Now again fellows like you are winning the victory that we see ahead. America owes everything to you, and to every member of our All-American Fighting Team. For the first graduation since 1941 we see the dawn of victory. God grant that it may come soon. May He grant that soon you may return to your regular normal peacetime way of living. You are representatives of E. H. S. wherever you go. We are very proud of each one of you. Remember we share with you your sacrifices and your proud achievements. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, we fervently ask God to bless and protect you — every one. 1t Head Master
