AT the close of this school year, Mr. Earl M. Benson, master in the English Depart- ment, will have completed his thirtieth and final year of service at English High School. Mr. Benson is an alumnus of Wesleyan University, Class of 1906. He taught English at Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, at Detroit University, and at the Fall River, Maiden, and Wellesley high schools prior to coming here in 1915. He has brought to his classes a wealth of scholarship, a hearty good humor, and a genuine interest in each and every boy. A lover of good reading, he has inspired a similar enthusiasm in all whom he has taught. He has literally guided generations of English High School boys through the treasure house of the very best and finest in literature. xj a In 1933, Mr. Benson secured a leave of absence and went to Europe. He stayea in London for ' one winter, attending London University and enjoying to the full the romantic old London of England ' s great writers. During the spring, he traveled in France and Italy. Then, he sojourned in the Scotland of Sir Walter Scott. In 1935, he summered in the British Isles, enjoying a bicycle tour around the coast of Ireland. All these rich experiences he shared with his subsequent classes at English High School. On the eve of his retirement, we extend to Mr. Benson the sincere appreciation of all English High School students and alumni. May he enjoy a long and happy retire- ment on his farm in Maine, his hours filled with a deep satisfaction springing eternally from his accomplished tasks as a teacher, friend, and guide.
