Classmates: ' ' J he Class of 1945 is the fourth class to graduate while our country is engaged in World War II, a war which will determine not only our future, but indeed the fate of all mankind. Four years ago we were bewildered strangers, merely students of the largest high school in the city; Today we are molded as one strong body, united, and un- surpassed. We are living in an era which will be decisive not only for ourselves, but also for the whole course of world history. Economic, social and political transitions are imminent. We of the present are like swimmers caught in a whirlpool consisting of two currents, the past and the future. A great task stands before the leaders of our democracy, but an equally great task is ahead of us. The problems of reconstruc- tion and readjustment to a new and better civilisation will require our services. We who are watching the machinery of government today will be called upon to solve the problems of tomorrow. In our hands will lie the responsibility of a cherished heritage. Let us strive to make certain that this will be a better, a happier and a healthier world. We bid farewell to our masters who have always been helpful and sympathetic. They have not only broadened our knowledge of the classics, literature, and the sciences, but they have inspired in us a true love of learning. We shall always cherish a high regard for them. And to Mr. Downey who has always aided and assisted us, we offer our humble tribute. May he guide many more classes in years to come with his exemplary leadership. I wish to thank you sincerely for the faith and trust you have placed in me and I hope that in the future we may again be united as we are today as an active unit within our alumni body. This Yearbook will be a constant pride to us as the completed record of our happy days at The English High School. No matter what divergerit walks of life we follow, no matter what different experiences come to us in the grim years ahead, we shall always be together in the pages of this Yearbook, Classmates of 1945, forever, Karle F. Head Master Walter F. Downey pre- sents the English High School Service Honor Medal to Technical Sergeant Andrew E. O ' Brien, ' 42, AAF. Sergeant O ' Brien has completed thirty bombing missions and has been awarded the Air Medal. Backing Fighting English. War Bonds totaling $14,775 were purchased at E. H. S. during our 6th War Loan Drive, December 12, 13, and 14. The boys who are about to invest in bonds are, left to right: Howard F. King, ' 47; John K. Costain, ' 47; Henry J. Abdelmaseh, ' 47; and Eugene M. Rossman, ' 47.
