To the Class of 1939: In the corridors of our school stand two bronze statues of heroic size, gifts of tivo graduates who once stood where you now stand. You all know the mottoes on those statues. To one of those graduates we also owe college scholarships, sufficient in number for all students who merit them. Many other English High School men have won distinction and rendered service. Are honor and achievement possible for you all. ' ' As a schoolboy I fished and swam in a lake near the spot where once stood the hut of a famous man. In India. Ghandi; in China. Lin Yutang: and in many other lands, many other men have been influenced by a book written in that hut and named for that lake Walden . From that book I take my message to you. The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. Plan your life: find out and pursue your own mode of living, and you need not be one of that mass. Enjoy the satis- faction of achievement in the work that you are best fitted to do. Do not spell success with the dollar sign. The life which men praise and regard as successful is but one kind . . . . money is not required to buy one necessary of the soul. Carefully select your reading. Not all books are as dull as their readers! Books are the treasured wealth of the world. How many a man has dated a new era in his life from the reading of a book. There is no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of a man to elevate his life by a conscious endeavor. However humble your life may be, meet it and live it! Do not despise your daily task. Do not worry how you may serve mankind. Thoreau chose to earn his living as a day laborer. As for service he said. Doing good does not agree with my constitution. What good I do must be for the most part wholly unintended. Like him you will find that the result of honest work is service to your fellow man. If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours. If you have built castles in the air. your work need not be lost: that is where they should be! Now. put the foundations under them. My parting words to you are: Build your castles, but don ' t forget to put under them the foundations! Albert F. Reed. Acting Headmaster. (4)
