CLK PI5CSI[)ENT § ME§§AGC As the famous Walrus is alleged to have said, the time has come to talk of many things. The bell is about to ring which will close our last class at English High, and we are about to take our place beside the men of Honor and Achievement who have graduated be- fore us. But not one of us, I am sure, leaves these hallowed study halls without a feeling of sincere regret that relentless time has so quickly ended these four happy years. When I say that we are sincerely thankful to our Headmaster and to all the members of the faculty for the wise counsel and guidance given us throughout our stay, I feel that I voice the sentiment of the entire student body. Personally, I shall always be grateful to my fellow students for the trust and confidence which they have reposed in me as the president of the Class of 1938 of The English High School. It is my honest conviction that the Class of 1938 has established a splendid record of loyalty, co-operation, and class-spirit. The members have shown themselves ever ready and eager to further, encourage, and assist our plans for the advancement and betterment of the Class. It may be justly said that the members of the Class of 1938 have set a high standard of achievement for those, who in turn, shall follow them at this, Our English High . Frederick L. Linn (8)

Boys of 1938: Despite all that you hear and see today, this is a pretty good world in which we live. However, you will agree that the best part of it is right here in the United States of America. Yet you say: Things are far from perfect here. Well, you are right. But, after all. where else in the world are conditions as good? You may well be proud and thankful that you live in America. You are graduating from The English High School, the oldest general high school in America, whose history and traditions extend back to the days when Boston was but a town, not a city. I am confident that by your lives you will make Boston a better place in which to live, that this Commonwealth of ours will add to its traditions through you. and that this land of America will have many of its problems solved by men like yourselves. The faculty of this school has confidence in you. It is essential that you have con- fidence in yourselves. Keep your chin up — always! Self respect inspires respect from others. The measure of this respect, both on the part of yourself and others, is based upon your own character. Your character is your greatest asset. Through life — keep it that way — an asset. Remember: The aim of every English High School boy is to become a man of Honor and Achievement. What is Honor and Achievement . ' ' Service to Mankind is Honor and Achievement. God Bless and Guide You — Every One Head Master

We are not quitting, leaving all we have At these diverging ways. For those who follow next to have and use: Then neither do we cancel memories The black steel stairway, long gray corridors, Of all the songs we ' ve sung, the prayers we ' ve prayed ; The thousand little corners that we ' ve seen; For they are ours, and hold the highest seat. For we have known them, not for what they Happy songs, earnest prayers. Cold steel, gray stone. ' ' ' ' gh, and mean it, as we go.
