he - €€ ODirJI English High Spirit During the last four years we have traveled along together, attempting many things. Some have succeeded, and others have failed; but out of these victories or defeats have come, tested in the forge of experience, ideals and attitudes that will serve us through life. i Time, in its onward sweep, is relentlessly carrying us toward a new portal that will open to us the lists of life and at the same time close upon us the period of carefree high school days. We must turn in different directions, some to enter the world of business and industry, others to continue their educational activities. All groups, however, are bound together by the strongest of ties, their loyalty to Alma Mater. English High has not only nourished us through these formative years, not only strengthened us in mind and in body, but above all it has imbued us with its spirit — ' a spirit constant as the stars. This feeling has no sudden birth. It is the result of long exposure to English High aims and traditions. Through the years this loyalty has attained an almost legendary reputation. To us of English it is a source of pride; to others, a cause for wonder. Each class, as it returns year after year to renew its pledge of fealty, gives evidence of the vigor of the love that fills the heart of every English High man from his entrance as a freshman to his departure as a senior and far beyond. Our introduction into the world of endeavor initiates us into the body of alumni whose principles become ours and whose example we cherish. The new dignity will test our worthiness to uphold the honor of our school. Whether in business or in education, the ideals of manhood must be those taught us in our youth. Conditions may differ, and no definite rule for the conduct of our classmates can be laid down; but he who follows the guidance of English High has a firm basis for future success. As our predecessors have been models foi us, so too do we become examples for those who follow. We, who have but lately learned the truth, have become teachers. I Thus it lives on, in a never-ending cycle, this elusive something with which i old English endows her sons. Daniel Chester French, the artist who conceived and executed the Lincoln Memorial in Washini ton, D. C, was its sculptor. Y- fi Before he started it, Mr. French and I had a lono talk abojCt ' fhc.y l ool, its students, its alumni, its history, its traditions, and its ' aims. A feiv months after this discussion Mr. French invited me to go to his New York studio, w.here he showed me the small clay model of the present statue. I have seen this statue literally grow up from infancy. You recall that you see there the figure of Alma Mater, the English High School. The youth, her son, is dressed in a track suit, X my for the race of life, which he is starting. It is necessary for mother and son to part. You will notice that Alma Mater has her arms on his shoulder. This parting is not easy. We see the son facing this moment courageously. He stands as the personification of self control and determination. He still holds clasped his niother ' s hand. He does not wish to go but duty calls him. The mother ' s parting words of advice are on the shield held in her left arm. ' ' Be Clean, Be Courteous, Be Sijuare. The boy ' s reply h -indicated below in bronze. The Aitn of Every English High School Boy Is to Be A Man of Honor and Achievement. Boys, this statipe symbolizes your feelings and mine at this time. Yon are readyirri ' , but do not wish to leave. I knoiv that you are ready, but dislike to see you go. I have every confidence in you. The English High School, its traditions, and its glory will be enriched by your lives. I pray that each of you will have a life of important service to others. Remember: Service to Mankind Is Honor and Achievement. God bless and guide you every one. Page Five

Knute R. Nelson A Message from Our President As we reach the final hours of our eventful days in English High, I would like to express my gratitude for the trust and confidence you have placed in me as chief executive of your class. It is not only the honor of being the president of a graduating class of the English High School that prompts this expression of thanks, but of being President of the Class of 1937, a class rich in achievement. Undoubtedly we have set a high standard for future classes. In addition to customary triumphs on the athletic field, we have enjoyed splendid success in our scholastic and social endeavors. Directly responsible for this fine re cord is the excellent support you have rendered your class officers and committees. X e leave English High, but with us we take the memories and friendships formed during an all too brief period. Throughout the years they will keep alive the traditional English High School spirit. It is altogether fitting that we pay tribute to the faculty of our school, the members of which have so unstintingly contributed their time and effort to the end that we might the better prepare for that which rfes before us. Our appreciation of their efforts and especially of those of our headmaster, Walter F.
