6 ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL RECORD timnrml Jfour gears IN the course of human events there is an inevitable limit, a cessation, an end. All things are hemmed in, either by time in terms of hours, weeks, and years, or by more tangible dimensions. Even nations are bor- dered and limited in extent. So, too, are the pleasant days at English High. They must come to an end. Time, the Grim Reaper, has severed our ties with the past ; and the dim and distant future of four years ago is this present moment which we are enjoying. Four years are all that have elapsed ; but how many events, what joys, what sorrows have packed into them. Four vital years, the importance of which cannot be over-estimated, four crucial periods of educational adjustment have passed so swiftly that it appears but yesterday that the massive doors of English High School swung to admit us to a higher plane of educational activity. During our high school career many events have taken place. Good or bad, our deeds and accom- plishments have gone on record. The high school years are the formative years in the lives of most of us. The impressions formed are not temporary, but fixed and definite; and as such they tend to direct the more mature judgments of our man- hood. During these years we have worked a little, played a little, and some of us may possibly have shirked a little ; but good or bad, our actions are recorded on the sands of Time, and the ideas, attitudes, and ideals of manhood will be complementary to those that we have revealed in our youth. We have embarked on many endeavors during the last four years, some worthy and others unworthy. All of our plans have not been crowned with success ; nor have they all been failures. Some of us have suc- ceeded scholastically, preferring the simple honors of the laurel wreath to the great letters which adorn the breast of the athlete ; others have made their definite contribution to worth-while achievement in extra-curricu- lar activities. The four endless years of yesterday have vanished, and now only a few precious moments remain. Underneath the cynical veneer of modern youth each of us is truly sorry that he must go. The old school takes on a different aspect as the time draws near to depart. Each hallowed nook, cranny, alcove and lecture hall becomes a treasure house of precious memories ; and the ghost of departed school heroes stand in every classroom, joined with us in grieving at the abruptness of Time. Horace sums up our feelings in his classic line, Eheu fugaces anni ! We cannot appreciate the true significance of parting and all that it means until time softens every de- tail of our four years ' stay. Memory, the master painter, tints all thoughts in soft and roseate hues, leaving the mind calmly contemplative of the days of yore. It takes time for anything to be appreciated properly. ' We, the Class of 1936, are entering a world that is on the upswing from an economic depression. It is customary to address the graduating class and give advice and good counsel, some of which, falling like the seed of the Biblical narrative on good soil, may take root and flower in later years. As the class goes out from school, we can offer no panacea for the ills of life, no set rule for instant and complete success. We shall not lay down any particular rules for the welfare of our classmates, for each individual has his own particular needs. Life in its richest aspects lies before us, and it is important that we be ready and willing to make the most of the opportunities which are ours. Each of us has his particular line of endeavor, and it is to this that he must devote his every effort. Whether he is surrounded by musty tomes and ivied walls or gaining a closer acquaintanceship with industrial activity, it is necessary that the task at hand call forth the best he has. And now, as the moment for parting is at hand, let us go forth without a backward glance. ' Let us carry the blue banners of English High School into all walks of life, into the four corners of the earth. Let us carry on the traditions of English High — and then, indeed, will we have become men of honor and achieve- ment. James E. Powers.
