Armstrong Principal Emeritus All voices raise in songs of praise for Englewood, Our flags unfold and banners hold for Englewood, For many friends throughout the land, With loyal hearts all willing stand, To shout her praise, Our Dear Old Englewood. .., -ay , rf Among the Absent The passage of the Teachers Compulsory Retirement Bill last lune meant a loss to Englewood of many of its valuable and loved instructors. They have left vacancies that will never, it seems, be filled in quite the same way. l Among those who retired was the former Head of lunior Hall, Mr. Walter S. McGee, Before coming to Englewood ifl 1896, he was the principal of a grammar school in Champaign, Illinois. Between 1899 and 1910 he taught at Hyde Park, returning to Englewood in 1910. The subjects he taught were historyg botany, zoology, physics and algebra. Coming to Enalewbod in 1890, Doctor Albert L. Smith, affectionately called Doc Smith, was absent only three,days from school in forty-five years. He taught physics, chemistry and mathematics, and was 'the joint author of Essentials of Chemistry, a textbook used widely in high schools. He belonged to the Collegiate Club and The American Chemical Society. The History Departm nt lost Mr. Frank C. lacoby, who came to Englewood in 1918. He had formerly taught in Cleviland, Ohio, and was Superintendent of Schools in Enid, Oklahomag Lyons, Kansas: and Sterling, Kansas. He also taught English and wrote A Handbook in English Grammar. Twenty-seven of Mr. Archibald Paterson's teaching years were spent at Englewood where he came in 1907. He had tbught at Whitchell High School and Glasgow University. German, French, English and mathematics were the subjects he taught, and tn the latter he was a wizard. l Mrs. Lillys R. Geer, Spanish teacher, came to Englewood in 1893 and left tn 1900 to teach at Lindblom. ln 1935 slie retumed to teach at Englewood. She has written some poems and a number of them have been published. Miss Lillian W. Thompson, one of the leading history teachers at Englewood, retired on Decem- ber 20, 1935, after forty years of active service. She attended the Lewis-Champlin Grammar School and Englewood. Land returned here in 1895 to teach Latin, English, and history. Taking rr great interest in her s ool sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, she has served as Grand President, and delegate to the Pan-He enic Conventions. A number of teachers have been made principals or transferred to teach in other schools. Mrs. Lois C. Morstrom,l former Head of Senior Hall, is now the principal of the Betsy Ross School. Before coming to Englewood she was the principal of the Kenwood Loring School for Girls. In September, 1923, she carne to Englewood where she taught Spanish, Latin, and mathematics. The principal of the aven and Armour Schools is now Miss Rosa G. Maddock, former zoology teacher. While at Engl wood, Miss Maddock was the sponsor of the Biology Club. Miss Iettie Conlan, teacher of history at Englewood for four years, is now the principal of the Sherwood School. 1 Mrs. Hazel P. Stelnfellldt has been transferred to Fenger High School where she taught before coming to Englewood in 1932. While at Englewood she taught music and is remembered for the successful operettas she directed. Coach Charles W. Palmer, who taught gymnasium and civics here for eleven years, has been transferred to Fenger also. He attended Englewood and during his athletic career earned ten E emblems. ' Mr. E. Howard Marshall, who came to Englewood as a science teacher in 1930, ts now teaching at Calumet. Mr. Gustave F. Schubssler, mathematics teacher, has transferred to Calumet where he is teaching chemistry. , . Miss Helen F. Stanton of the English Department has transferred to Sullivan. Miss Ramah I... Guthfie, business training teacher, and Miss Agnes Drever, English teacher, have resigned. 1 Teachers on Sabbaticdl leave are: Miss Ella L. Campbell, English: Miss Inez E. Ostberg, Spanish, land incidentally a cousin of Colonel Lindberghlp Miss Katherine B. Cole, stenography: and Miss Adele A. Hedeen, English, who is studying at Columbia University. Miss Lois F. Ketcham, substitute stenography teacher, who became Mrs. Harold M. Davidson, died at Little Rock, Arkansas, on October 15, 1935, after an appendicitls operation. Miss Iessie M. Ltvermbre, who retired last June as an English teacher, died on December 17, 1935. Before coming to lEnglewood fifteen years ago she taught at Medill High and Wendell Phillips.
