ABOUT THE UPPER SCHOOL This year has been one of great advancement in the Upper School for it has marked an important addition to the curriculum and an increase in the influence of the student in school affairs The outstanding addition to the curriculum was The Bible as Literature D Mitchell and Dr Prosebaugh presented the course to the seniors once a week and gave them an idea of the tremendous influence of the Bible on literature through the centuries One of the most notable changes of recent years was the rncreased importance of the student in school HHHIIS The librarv is now run almost entirely by Upper School students and a number of seniors have helped to proctor study halls The formation of an Honor Board was a great step towards the Honor System which it is hoped will someday be firmlv established as a School trad1t1on An mnovation which has helped the morale of the School is the detention penod a period set up by the Facultx to gnc extra studying time to students whose daily xi ork tailed to certlfx and to discipline recalcitrant students The proximity of student to Faculty brought about bx these new institutions has created harmony that has made the school xear xerv enjox able and the Upper School has formed the basis for a neu sx stem to insure personal improvement and school unity THE INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL 7 ' 7 , . Y , , , . X, . , , 1' 7 1 fy 7 The students of the Intermediate School this year have made many valuable contributions to the School. Outstanding was a panel presented to an assembly of parents on the vital problem of the relationship between parents and teenagers In sports, as in studies, the boys of the Intermediate School have excelled Inter mediate boys compete not only in intramural but in inter-scholastic athletics Several students played on the junior Varsity Football Squad, and the Form III basketball quintet engaged teams from neighboring towns and emerged with a favorable record The bovs also have found time for extracurricular activities, and students of the Intermediate School are librarians and staff members of the Spectator and the Blue and White. This excellent record would not be possible if it were not for the work of Mr Fred B. Hutchins, the Intermediate School Principal. Nr. Hutchins is teacher guide and counselor to the Intermediate students. VVith his guidance and the influence of the other masters, the students have upheld the good standard of the school and ' 7 1 . , . , 7 1 Y 7 7 y , . I, . , , K . l , p. , , 25, y 1 l contributed to the success of the school xear THE LOWER SCHOOL Under the guidance of Mr Drake Mr Ilansalpaker Mr Root and Mr llllng worth the Lower School has made manv improvements this year The most important change was the nevt lv adopted social studies course History music art geography and science are nou all included in this course Each class nom studies all hte subjects u hile concentrmng on a certain period in history I this manner the classes were taught from a vxorld uevxpoint and not from a restricted one Because the need for a bigger and better librarv has increased with the arrival of new boys the Lovxer School Library this xear has been completely reorganlzed and broadened Mrs McEwen has been appointed as full time librarian Many new books have been purchased and the whole library catalogued As a result of planning and hard work the library now 15 able to meet the needs of the students A Junior student council started last xear IS continuing to do a fine job of govern mg the Lower School A praisevsorthx job his also been done by the new school newspaper edited bv the sixth grade This year the emphasis has been on a more balanced program for all classes With these manv improvements the Lovt er School IS preparing its students ever more fullv for the higher education ahead U8
